Reliance BP seeks higher price

Reliance Industries, UK oil giant BP and Canada's Niko have filed an arbitration notice against the Indian government over gas prices.
The firms operate India biggest natural gas field, KG-D6, and had won an approval to nearly double their prices.
But the implementation of that move was deferred by India's election watchdog ahead of the ongoing general elections.
The firms said the delay in increasing the prices was impacting their plans to develop the field.
The companies said in a statement over the weekend that without clarity on when the prices will rise, they "are unable to sanction" planned investments of close to $4bn (£2.4bn) this year.
"In addition, this will also delay the ability of the parties to appraise and develop other significant discoveries made last year."

Shri K.Desiraju, Secretary, Ministry of Consumer Affairs : Urges for framework and transparency from Direct Selling Industry

IDSA-PHDCCI Organizes Seminar on Direct Selling: An Emerging Non-Store Retail Format

New Delhi, 13 May 2014: With Direct Selling Industry emerging as a powerful Channel of distribution in Non-Store Retail Format and is becoming popular with the consumers with the policies of this Industry like buy-back, money-back and other guarantees. In order to safeguard the interests of Consumers in a more channelized manner, the Industry in India needs a safe and legally strong business environment. To stimulate the need for policy framework, PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Indian Direct Selling Association (IDSA) came together and organized a Seminar on Direct Selling: An Emerging Non-Store Retail Format on Monday 12th May, 2014 at New Delhi.

Shri Keshav Desiraju, IAS, Secretary, Consumer Affairs, Govt. of India during his address as Chief Guest emphasized on Direct Selling Industry as an emerging format of Non-Store Retail. He appreciated the issues which are being faced by the industry. Stakeholders should act in transparent manner and work within the framework of the existing legislations. He also added that whenever Govt. of India is coming out with legislation, it should be framed out with a long term perspective and from the Industry perspective there should be a whole hearted commitment towards abiding and complying of such legislation to the eternity.

Ms Chavi Hemanth, Secretary General, IDSA, opened the seminar and said, “With the emerging growth of Direct Selling- a part of Non-Store Retail in India and all across globe, we are evaluating the significance of legal framework serving it. It has crossed a turnover of INR 7164 Crore in 2012-13 with a CAGR of 20% promoting self employment opportunities.”
“Owing to the lack of Policy Framework, Direct Selling Industry is facing huge challenges and there are operational hindrances limiting the growth of the Industry. Industry has been aiming high despite hurdles and thus is self regulating itself with their Code of Ethics to protect the interest of consumers, direct sellers and all other stakeholders. Hence, our industry requests government to take steps to ensure that the industry is protected with the very much needed statutory protective measures,” Ms. Hemanth further said.
Emphasizing on Indian consumers, Mr. Alok B Shriram, Senior Vice-President, PHD Chamber stated that “The Indian consumer is gradually moving from the local “kirana” shopping to large convenience stores/ online shopping/ network marketing, that is, direct selling / television based home shopping, etc. An increase in the number of young employed executives and the increasing population of working women is stimulating growth of modern retailing in urban areas. These innovative retail models such as direct selling have initiated a wave of entrepreneurship across the country, attracted heavy investments by individuals as well as private equity firms and are generating considerable employment opportunities.”

Shri Keshav Desiraju, IAS, Secretary, Consumer Affairs, Govt. of India along with Shri Amit Yadav, IAS, Secretary, Industries, Govt. of NCT of Delhi  and other panelists released a Book on “Direct Selling: Is it Ethical ?” written by Mr. Bejon Misra on the occasion of this seminar.

“The Industry has been emerging as an alternative sales distribution channel in Indian market over the years and the growth prospects of the industry are bright which is set to take off as driven by strong consumer base, rising urbanization, growing middle class population and expanding markets going forward,” Dr. S.P. Sharma, Chief Economist, PHD Chamber stated.

Direct Selling as boosted local economies and given empowerment and new direction to women and youth in the country. Mr. Bejon Misra, Renowned Consumer Policy Expert and author of ‘Jaago Graahak Jaago’ Campaign said, “It is an emerging non-store retail format which has initiated a wave of entrepreneurship across the country, not only generating considerable employment opportunities but has also provided choice to the consumer with added value. This has proved that industry grows only when it gives importance to the consumer”

Citizens of Nallasopara, Pragati Nagar terrorized and
beaten up by local Police

A group of citizens residing in Pragati Nagar, Nallasopara had to face the wrath of the local police for staging a protest against the loss of electricity in their area which had not been restored for 3 days. After having subject to extreme discomfort, the citizens resorted to stage a peaceful protest and draw the attention of the concerned officers. In no time, 15 to 20 cops rushed to the venue and started lathi-charging the residents without any cause or provocation.  The brutal onslaught by the police was carried out atleast three times within a span of 15-20 minutes showing no concern for the life and limb of the residents. Among the injured was a senior citizen age 75 years, Shri Gurmukh Singh who was treated like a serious criminal and beaten inhumanely, leaving his hand swollen till date.

As the aggression from the police continued, the hapless citizens started pelting stones in an act of self defence. Disgruntled by the retaliation from the residents, cops fired rounds in the air and later barged into their homes and attacked them again. Around 48 people were arrested by police without any evidence and have been kept in custody without bail by illegally applying Section 307 IPC on them.  The sections and charges applied on the accused are unfounded and Police and have no evidence to prove the same. The police lack the intent to investigate the matter and have kept the innocent people in custody. Also, the imposition of section 307 IPC was done to deprive them of bail.

AAP demands the Home Minster, Shri R.R. Patil to act on the matter and suspend the cops for beating and harassing the residents of Pragati Nagar and unlawfully arresting and imposing Section 307 IPC.

Donetsk leader declares independence from Ukraine

Donetsk leader declares independence from Ukraine
The self-proclaimed head of the “People’s Republic of Donetsk” in eastern Ukraine has declared the region a sovereign state and asked Russia to consider allowing it to accede.
“Proceeding from the expression of the will of the people of the Donetsk People’s Republic and in order to restore historical justice, we ask the Russian Federation to consider the issue of the Donetsk People’s Republic becoming part of the Russian Federation,” Denis Pushilin told reporters on Monday.
Pushilin was speaking after he claimed 89 percent of people in the region supported independence in Sunday’s referendum, which was slammed as illegal and a farce by both the West and Kiev.
“We, the people of the Donetsk People’s Republic, based on the results of the referendum held on 11 May 2014… declare that the (republic) is henceforth a sovereign state,” Pushilin said.
Pushilin had said earlier that a presidential election that the West sees as vital to ease tensions in the crisis-wracked country “will not happen” in the Donetsk region.
This raised the possibility of stronger Western sanctions against Russia, whom the West blames for fomenting unrest in the former Soviet republic.

World looks forward to learn from Indian elections

ASHOK B SHARMA*

The world is anxiously awaiting the results of the 16th general elections in India, the largest democracy and one of the emerging economy. Apart from several power centres in the multi-polar geo-politics, countries which are eager to learn from the experiences of Indian democracy are patiently waiting for the outcome on May16.

Over past 64 years Indian democracy has attained a level of maturity. Recently in the midst of the poll process in the country, 30 participants from Bhutan, Congo, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Georgia, Ghana, Kyrgyzstan, Lebanon, Lesotho, Malaysia, Maldives, Palestine, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tajikistan, Tanzania and Yemen participated in the third course on election management conducted by the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM), a body set up by the Election Commission of India.
Some of the countries like El Salvador, Ethiopia, Maldives, Palestine, South Sudan and Sudan have participated in earlier courses conducted by IIIDEM. India has also extended its expertise in conducting polls in Afghanistan.

First such course for foreign participants on poll management was conducted by IIIDEM in October 2012 where 28 participants from 18 countries from Asia and the Pacific, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean attended the programme. These countries include, Cambodia, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Libya, Maldives, Mauritius, Mongolia, Myanmar, Niger, Palestine, Panama, Sudan, Uganda, Yemen, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

In the second course held in April 2013, 30 senior officials from 19 countries including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belarus, Cambodia, Gambia, Ghana, Lebanon, Lithuania, Palestine, Peru, Senegal, South Africa, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago and Uzbekistan participated.

The courses are conducted under Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme of India’s Ministry of External Affairs. The courses cover various aspects of election management and includes field level exposure to Election Commission of India’s poll machinery. Special courses are designed for mid-career election officials of India’s ITEC-partner countries. The ITEC programme is designed for South-South cooperation.

The world is watching with interest India’s experiment with parliamentary democracy with an estimated 814,591,184 registered voters in 2014, including 387,911,330 female voters and 28,341 trans genders to elect 543 members of Lok Sabha, the Lower House of the Indian Parliament. There are 23,161,269 first time and young voters within the age group 18-19 years. There are 6 recognised national parties, 47 recognised state parties and 1563 other registered parties in 2014 poll fray.

Indian parliamentary democracy has evolved since Independence in August 15, 1947, recognizing the need for universal adult franchise. The Election Commission was formally constituted in January 25, 1950, one day before India became a Sovereign Democratic Republic. The first Chief Election Commissioner, Sukumar Sen was appointed in March 21, 1950. Since then till October 16, 1989, the Commission functioned as a single member body.

From October 16, 1989 to January 1, 1990, it was converted into a three-member body but on January 1, 1990, it reverted to the system of single member body. However, since October 1, 1993, the Commission is regularly functioning as a three-member body.

For the first and second general elections in 1951-52 and 1957, the Election Commission adopted the Balloting System of voting under which every candidate was allotted a separate ballot box at each polling station in a screened compartment and the voter was required only to drop his ballot paper into the ballot box of the candidate of his choice.

With a view to improve the system and check fraudulant voting from the third general elections in 1962 onwards, the Commission switched over to “marking system” of voting under which a common ballot paper containing the names and election symbols of all contesting candidates is printed on which the voter has to put a mark with an arrow cross mark rubber stamp on or near the symbol of the candidate of his choice. All the arked ballot papers are put into a common ballot box.

Further improvement in voting system was seen with the introduction of the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) which were used for the first time in part of Parur Assembly Constituency in Kerala in 1982 on experimental basis. Later, the extensive use of EVMs began in 1998. The EVMs were used at all polling stations in the country in the 14thgeneral elections to the Lok Sabha in 2004 for the first time. Since then all elections to Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies have been held using EVMs. However, there was some complaints about manipulations of EVMs in the last 15th general elections. The Commission, therefore, decided to use Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system along with the EVMs in select constituencies in the 16th general elections in 2014 by deploying 20,600 VVPAT units.

Following the verdict of the Supreme Court, the Commission has decided to give option to the voters who are not willing to vote for any of the fielded candidates. A button – None of the Above – has been inserted in the EVMs and ballot papers.

The use of indelible ink on the finger of the voter is an unique to check double voting. The electoral stain typically contains silver nitrate which stains the skin on exposure to ultra violet light, leaving a mark that is impossible to wash off. Other interesting features of Indian elections are enforcement of model code of conduct during the poll process, regulation of opinon polls, checking paid news and ceiling on poll expenditure.

(1997 (11) SCC 121); Francis Coralie vs. Union Territory of Delhi (1981); UP Evam Vikas Paroshad
vs. Friends Coop. Housing Society Ltd. (1996); and Chameli Singh & Ors vs. State of Uttar Pradesh
(1996). Singh said that no colony in Chandigarh should be demolished and all evictions planned
by the administration should be stopped with immediate effect. He added that these
demolitions are against the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) norms laying emphasis on in situ
upgradation and added all settlements should be developed in an in situ manner with all
amenities for a dignified living of the residents.
Shivani Chaudhry, co-convenor, NFHR, and Executive Director, Housing and Land Rights
Network (HLRN) said that housing is a basic human right enshrined in the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and
Cultural Rights (ICESCR) that India has ratified. She said the Chandigarh Administration should
regularise all informal settlements and provide security of tenure and basic services. The
forced evictions of these communities violate a range of human rights, and contravene not only
international law but also the Constitution of India and international guidelines such as the UN
Basic Principles and Guidelines on Development-based Evictions and Displacement.
Manmohan Sharma, Shehri Beghar Awaas Adhikar Manch, Chandigarh, said that city
administration has issued eviction notices to four more colonies. He said, the forum is working
with the community and other organisations to develop an action plan to provide all support to
the people who received notices.
NFHR strongly condemns the forced evictions, demolition of homes, and discrimination against
the urban poor (CityMakers) in Chandigarh. NFHR seeks to challenge the denial of the human
rights of the CityMakers and the orchestrated efforts of the Chandigarh Administration to deny
the urban poor their ‘Right to the City,’ which includes the human rights to adequate housing,
livelihood/work, education, health, equality, participation and information. NFHR calls on the
Union Territory of Chandigarh Administration to immediately provide relief and rehabilitation
to the evicted families and to take measures to halt further evictions and to protect the human
rights of the state’s poor

Left parties were decimated in the Lok Sabha

16052014
Left decimated in Bengal, alleges

Left parties were decimated in the Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal which they had once ruled continuously for 34 years, with CPI(M) alleging “massive rigging” by Trinamool Congress.
“We are not prepared to accept this result as it does not reflect the actual position, the strength and support of the Left parties. We cannot accept it as our percentage of votes has fallen from 41 per cent in the 2009 elections to 28-30 per cent,” said CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat told reporters in New Delhi.
While the Left in Kerala made “major gains” and increased margins in Tripura, he said “we place West Bengal in an exceptional situation where the Election Commission has failed to intervene to rectify the situation from the third to the fifth round of elections when 32 of the 42 seats went to polls.
And this was despite complaints by all parties opposing the TMC, including BJP and Congress.” “The widespread rigging, violence and intimidation targeting the Left Front in these elections has led to a distorted result which does not reflect the popular support for the CPI(M) and the front,” Karat said.
Overall, he said the people had voted for a change and against the Congress-led UPA government whose policies led to price rise, agrarian distress and corruption.
“This negative vote was taken advantage of by the BJP.” “We too worked for the rejection of the Congress but I can’t say we are happy with the outcome,” Karat said.
In a similar vein, CPI National Secretary D Raja said BJP had taken full advantage of the anger of the people against Congress and its policies on one hand and the “complete absence” of a non-Congress, non-BJP alternative in the Lok Sabha polls.
“It is a big setback for the Left, which has to do a serious introspection, reinvent itself and rework its strategy for the coming days,” Raja said.

Naveen Patnaik on Friday appeared set to retain power for a fourth consecutive term in Odisha with BJD surging ahead in 112 of the 147 assembly seats with counting in progress.
Congress, which was leading in 22 seats an hour ago, was now leading in 18 seats followed by BJP in 12.
Patnaik, the Odisha Chief Minister, was leading in Hinjili by over 27,000 votes, while BJD’s Mayadhar Jena was ahead of OPCC president Jaydev Jena by 16,357 votes.
Two ministers Usha Devi and Ramesh Majhi and BJP state President K V Singhdeo, who were trailing, were now leading.
Usha Devi was now leading by 16,232 votes over her nearest Congress rival Manoranjan Dyan Samantray and Ramesh Majhi by 6855 votes.
K V Singhdeo, facing strong opposition from BJD’s Prakruti Devi, was back on the track with a lead of 793 votes.
Finance minister Prasanna Acharya, however, was trailing by 3001 votes behind his Congress rival Subal Sahu and school and mass education minister Rabi Narayan Nanda by 3800 votes behind his Congress rival Tara Prasad Bahinipati.
Also trailing were BJD leader and former minister A U Singhdeo (Balangir), former speaker and BJD leader Kishore Mohanty, Hema Gamang and Anup Sai, who quit Congress and joined BJD recently.
Congress leaders Lalatanedu Bidyadhar Mohapatra (Brahmagiri) and Chiranjibi Biswal, besides BJPLP leader Jay Narayan Mishra were also trailing.
Congress chief whip and senior leader Prasad Harichandan was pushed to the third place in the Satyabadi seat behind BJD’s R R Baliarsingh and independent candidate Uma Samantray.
BJP candidate Bijay Mohapatra was trailing by 3884 votes behind his BJD rival Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak at Mahakalpada, while Manmohan Samal, former state unit president of the party Manmohan Samal was also trailing at Chandabali.
Its candidate Dilip Ray was leading in Rourkela. Ama Odisha Party leader Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, the son-in-law of Assam Governor J B Patnaik, was leading in Khandapada and Samata Kranti Dal nominee was leading in one seat, while independents were ahead in two places.

BJP Mission 272 accomplished Modi seeks mother blessing

16052014
Led by Modi, top BJP leaders ahead in their seats
Modi takes mother
Modi the phenomenal  all set to become the next Prime Minister, Narendra Modi on Friday first assignment was to meet his mother to seek her blessings.
Modi, 63, bowed down before his mother Hiraba, who blessed him by putting both his hands on him, as the trends pointed to a clear win for the saffron party in Lok Sabha polls.”He has my blessings and he will lead the country towards development,” she said, when asked to comment on the counting trends.
The BJP Prime Ministerial candidate also sat with the family members and talked to his mother, who is staying with her other son Pankaj Modi in Gandhinagar.
He was also seen talking to the children of his brother’s family.
Hiraba also prayed to the lord this morning to make his son prime minister and poured holy water looking towards the sun, shortly before the initial trends of counting of votes poured.
Modi’s mother had also used her right to franchise from Gandhinagar Lok Sabha seat, from where veteran BJP leader L K Advani is contesting.
Earlier, before filing his nomination papers from Vadodara Lok Sabha constituency, Modi had sought blessings of his mother.
BJP has decimated  INC for the first time 2014.Congress leaders have conceded defeat and their tally will be record low  surpassing of LS Election 99 in which INC won 114 seats.
Addressing e channels the  BJP patriarch L K Advani on Friday congratulated Narendra Modi but apparently did not give full credit to him saying it needs to be assessed as to what contribution his leadership has made to the party’s unprecedented victory.
BJP patriarch, who has not shared the best of relations with Modi in the past, called up the party’s Prime Ministerial candidate as soon as it became clear that the party was headed for a clear majority of its own in the Lok Sabha polls. An emotional Advani, who visited the party headquarters here to be part of the celebrations, told reporters that the country had never witnessed such an election in its history.
He termed the BJP’s victory as a result of mainly the people’s anger against corruption, misgovernance and dynastic rule and asked those in politics to draw lessons from the results.
Refusing to entertain any questions, he said, “We won in places where we had never won in the past. Amid all these things, people who are in power in government and those who are in politics should also collectively analyse this result and take lesson.”
Appearing reluctant to give entire credit to Modi for the party’s historic performance, Advani said, “In this victory, the contribution of Modi’s leadership, RSS and other organisations like the BJP, has to be analysed. But today’s result mainly is against corruption, misgovernance and dynstic rule.”
He said he is very happy with the results and feels that there should be a deeper analysis of why the party got this kind of a mandate.
Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and  top BJP leaders were far ahead in their respective constituencies but majority of their Congress counterparts trailing except Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, Kamal Nath, Amrinder Singh thus paving way for saffron party-led NDA  is all set to get a majority in the lower house with brute majority as per the initial trends.
Recording its best ever performance in its 34-year existence, the BJP on its own was leading in 276 seats, three more than the required half-way mark in the 543-member House, while its allies were ahead in 49 seats. The  leads for various constituencies  trickle in, all its top leaders were ahead in the race, barring Arun Jaitley, who was trailing in Amritsar by over 57,500 votes.
VIP constituency of  Vadodra  in Gujarat, Modi was marching  ahead of his nearest Congress rival Madhusudan Mistry by a margin of over 5.60 lakh votes, while he was leading in Varanasi by a margin of around 69,000 votes.Congress President Sonia Gandhi was leading in Rae Bareli by a margin of around 1,39,000 votes from BJP’s Ajay Agarwal, while party Vice-President Rahul Gandhi was leading in Amethi by a margin of 9,500 votes against his nearest BJP rival Smriti Irani.BJP President Rajnath Singh was leading in Lucknow by a margin of 35,000 votes from his nearest Congress rival Rita Bahuguna Joshi.  Gandhinagar, BJP’s L K Advani was leading by a margin of over 88,000 votes from his nearest Congress rival Kiritbhai Patel. External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid was trailing on the fifth spot even behind the independent candidate in Farrukhabad seat.
The Samajwadi Party is leading on seven seats with party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav leading from Mainpuri and Azamgarh by 1,37,013 and 18577 votes respectively.
His daugter-in-law, Dimple Yadav is leading Kannauj by 25,124 over her nearest rival Subrat Pathak of BJP.
Yadav’s nephew Akshay Yadav is leading by 9247 votes from Firozabad while another nephew Dharmedra Yadav is leading by 22,773 from Badaun. BJP’s young face Varun Gandhi is leading from Sultanpur while his mother Maneka Gandhi is leading from Pilibhit with a comfortable margin of over 90,000 votes.
Murli Manohar Joshi was leading by a margin of 72,000 votes against his nearest Congress rival Shriprakash Jaiswal in Kanpur.
BJP’s Uma Bharti was leading by 40,000 votes against her nearest Samajwadi Party rival Chandrapal Yadav.
Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav was leading in Mainpuri by a margin of 1,37,000 votes against his nearest BJP rival Shatrughan Chauhan.
He was also leading by 18,500 votes in Azamgarh from his nearest BJP rival Ramakant Yadav, after initially trailing at third place.
SP’s Dimple Yadav, wife of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav was leading by 23,60 votes in Kannauj against her nearest BJP rival Subrat Pathak.
Mathura, BJP’s Hema Malini was leading by 82,600 votes against her nearest RLD rival Jayanat Chaudhary.
reports from Pilibhit, BJP’s Maneka Gandhi was leading by 79,500 votes and her son Varun Gandhi was leading by over 56,500 votes in Sultanpur.
Ruling Naga People’s Front nominee and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio is set to be the lone representative of the state to the lower house of Parliament.
Rio polled 61,4979 votes, leading by 3,56,314 votes over his nearest Congress rival KV Pusa, according to trends available.
This will be the third straight win for the ruling Naga People’s Front, as it had also won the 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha polls in the state.
In 2009, NPF candidate CM Chang won against Congress’ K Asungba Sangtam by a 4.83 lakh votes, setting the highest record margin in the country.
Nagaland Congress President SI Jamir told reporters “We cannot expect a good result on our party.
M Karunanidhi-led DMK on Friday headed for a rout in Tamil Nadu as its arch rival AIADMK was well set for a clean sweep, surging ahead in 35 seats out of 39 seats.
The spectacular performance by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s party in the hustings also decimated a deserted Congress and shattered what was described as a “formidable” six-party alliance stitched by BJP to gain foothold in this southern state.
The outcome of the election was the worst ever for DMK after 1998 when it had won five seats when the party-led United Front ended up with a tally of nine facing crushing defeat at the hands of AIADMK-led NDA that scored 30 seats.
DMK bigwigs and 2G accused Dayanidhi Maran (Central Chennai) and A Raja (Nilgiris-SC) and T R Baalu (Thanjavur) conceded enough ground to their AIADMK rivals, virtually ruling out a comeback in the subsequent rounds of counting.
The trends have come as a jolt to the four-decade old party, which faced internal rumblings leading to the expulsion of former Union minister and Karunanidhi’s elder son M K Alagiri, who had openly campaigned against the party nominees.
DMK was aiming to convert a perceived anti-incumbency into votes in the backdrop of power cuts and drinking water shortage but it was ‘Amma’ all the way.
According to counting trends available for 37 seats at 12 noon, AIADMK was leading in 35 seats including those perceived to be DMK turfs while PMK and BJP were ahead in one constituency each.
Congress, forced to face polls alone with no takers for an alliance, put up some semblance of fight only in Kanyakumari where the fortunes fluctuated between it and BJP before the saffron party shot into the lead.
PMK’s Anbumani Ramadoss was leading in Dharmapuri, bringing cheers to BJP alliance partners.
However, BJP’s allies – DMDK, PMK, MDMK and KDMK – seemed to be swept away in the ‘Lady Wave,’ as an AIADMK leader put it, although Jayalalithaa’s national ambitions seem to have been cut short by BJP’s good show across the country.
Union Territory of Puducherry saw a reversal as Union Minister of State V Narayanasamy trailed by over 6,000 votes behind his nearest ruling AINRC rival R Radhakrishnan after leading in the initial rounds.
Narayanasamy had taken a lead of about 9,000 votes initially but conceded ground later.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa today congratulated Narendra Modi on his party’s massive victory in the Indian general election and invited him on a state visit.
Rajapaksa telephoned Modi to congratulate him on his resounding victory and extended an invitation to the BJP prime ministerial candidate to visit the island-nation, President’s spokesman Mohan Samaranayake said. The BJP win was welcomed in Sri Lanka as the Rajapaksa government’s relations with the Congress Party led-UPA government had soured over the years. The Congress government had backed two UN Human Rights Council resolutions against Sri Lanka while it abstained from voting during the US-backed resolution in March.
Leading commentator Dayan Jayathilaka said the BJP victory would lead the India-Lanka relations into a decisive phase.
Jayathilaka, a former Sri Lankan diplomat, said Rajapaksa needs to develop a close friendship with Modi. “Modi-Mahinda (Rajapaksa) friendship will be the key to all this,” Jayathilaka said.
“There are similarities in Modi’s and Mahinda’s political discourses. Both have a nationalist flavour in their political approaches.”
He, however, warned there will be forces who would want to create wedge between the two leaders.
He hinted that Modi might be more assertive towards Sri Lanka than Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Singh.
“This is why I say the BJP victory is decisive for Sri Lanka. It all depends as to how our President will be able to cultivate a friendship with Prime Minister Modi and move ahead.”

Kidnapped Nigerian girls are just the tip of the iceberg

Dear Naresh:
American military and intelligence advisors are helping to search for the more than 200 missing Nigerian school girls taken by Boko Haram terrorists. It is important for the United States to assist in the effort to rescue the girls, whose families are awaiting news about their whereabouts. Rumors have indicated that some or all of them may be taken across Nigeria’s borders to Cameroon or Chad, where the rule of law is even weaker.
As the United States assists Nigeria in this effort, it should also address the root causes of the crisis. Economic desperation and human rights abuses committed by Nigerian security forces have fueled the rise of Boko Haram.
Evidence is mounting that the Nigerian government failed to act on warnings that the kidnapping was planned. It is all too clear that corruption, poor training and a lack of concern for civilians contributed to the current crisis.
Today, senior administration officials testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to answer questions about what the U.S. is doing to help. Now the administration needs to double down on how it plans to help Nigeria confront the root causes of terrorism.
Sincerely,
Tad Stahnke

Death toll in Turkey mine explosion rises to 292

The death toll in Turkey’s coal mine explosion rose to 292 after eight more bodies were discovered in the western town of Soma, energy minister Taner Yildiz said on Friday. The minister added that rescuers are working on saving ten additional miners who are still trapped. The fire in the mine, which was hindering rescue efforts, has been largely put out. The cause of the accident is still being determined, Yildiz stated, adding that it is likely that an electrical fault led to the explosion. The blast occurred about 1.9 kilometers below the surface and reportedly disabled an elevator in the mine shaft. The workers are trapped some four kilometers away from the exit. Earlier, Yildiz told reporters that 787 workers were in the Soma mine when the explosion occurred in the mine’s power unit.

Arkansas Supreme Court reverses move to grant same-sex marriage licenses

The state of Arkansas has capped off a chaotic week in legal wranglings regarding same-sex marriages with a Supreme Court reversal of a lower court judge’s ruling which had invalidated existing bans, the Arkansas Times reported. Top VA health official resigns amid growing hospital wait time scandal

Dr. Robert Petzel, the Department of Veterans Affairs undersecretary for health, resigned Friday amid allegations of deadly healthcare delays for veterans. Critics branded the resignation “damage control,” as Petzel already planned to retire later this year, Reuters reports. VA Secretary Eric Shinseki acknowledged the need to ensure more timely treatment of America’s military veterans while accepting Petzel’s resignation. The two men testified before Congress on Thursday about the growing scandal at the Veterans Health Administration’s facilities in Phoenix. The VA put three senior officials there on administrative leave after doctors at the facilities said they were ordered to hold veterans’ names for months on a secret waiting list until a spot opened on the official list that met the VA’s two-week wait-time goals. At least 40 veterans died while awaiting care at the Phoenix VA. There are similar allegations of cover-up schemes at VA facilities in at least seven other cities around the country.

Arkansas judge ruling opens door to same-sex marriage licenses

An Arkansas judge expanded his ruling on gay marriages on Thursday, striking down all state laws preventing same-sex couples from marrying. Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza originally ruled that the 10-year-old, voter-approved constitutional ban and a separate state law barring same-sex marriages were unconstitutional. He refused to issue a stay as the state attorney general sought to appeal the ruling. Clerks in five counties issued marriage licenses to gay couples, and 456 of those couples had received their licenses, the Associated Press reported. On Wednesday, the Arkansas Supreme Court rejected Attorney General Dustin McDaniel’s request for a stay on the ruling, but still effectively halted the issuing of licenses by ruling that Piazza’s decision on gay marriage did not change the license law, according to the Washington Post. Piazza’s latest ruling expanded his previous one to strike down the prohibition on clerks issuing same-sex marriage licenses.

With the 111-39 vote, the legislation, passed by the state Senate earlier this week, now goes to Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon. Should Nixon veto the legislation, there is likely enough support for the measure in the Republican-dominated Legislature to override it. The state, which has only one clinic that provides abortion procedures, previously mandated a 24-hour waiting period before an abortion. Missouri joins South Dakota and Utah as the only states that require a three-day waiting period.

‘Modi Wave’ Prevails as BJP Sweeps Indian Elections; Congress Routed

17052014

NARENDRA MODI
India awoke amid an unprecedented buzz of excitement and anticipation today as the Election Commission began counting the 550 million votes cast in the recently concluded general elections. Millions of Indians tuned into TV debates and radio sets from early in the morning, looking into the various permutations and combinations of political equations as the latest updates on the counting process trickled in. Everything came to a screeching halt in offices, universities and neighborhoods, with the only important topic of discussion being the possible outcome of the polls.
Within a matter of hours, the trends were clear — the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had swept the elections with a singular majority, decimating the ruling Congress party and other opponents.
In a historic climax to one of India’s most explosive elections in recent years, the BJP — led by its firebrand PM candidate Narendra Modi — is set to form the next government with a mandate of 280 seats (In India’s 543-seat parliament, a party needs to secure at least 272 seats to form the government). A thumping single party majority such as this also marks the end of India’s tryst with weak coalitions.
BJP seems to have successfully ripped into India’s voter base with Modi’s magnetic charisma and an agenda of hope, riding high on a wave of anti-incumbency against the government. The Congress too has acknowledged defeat, having clinched only 47 seats as per the latest count in an embarrassing rout. Several of its key leaders have lost the battle to BJP candidates, signaling a clear shift in voter inclinations.
The much-celebrated ‘Modi wave’ has penetrated and prevailed across the country, with a confident authority that is reflected in the BJP’s simple yet hard-hitting pitch,“Ab ki baar, Modi sarkaar” (This time around, go for Modi government). Despite misgivings of certain sections — Modi is yet to completely wipe off the perception of being a ‘divisive leader’ in the civil society — an overwhelming number of voters have extended strong support to the BJP. One of the reasons behind this has been the BJP’s ability of effectively communicating an infectious feeling of optimism and euphoria — the party’s poll slogan, “Acche din aane wale hain” (Good days are about to come), for instance, has captured public imagination across rural and urban Indian hinterlands.
Evidently, these efforts have struck a chord among voters frustrated with the 10 years of Congress-led United Progressive Alliance regime.
A nation, divided by caste, religious, regional and linguistic divides, seems to have united against brazen corruption, rising prices of essential commodities, underdevelopment, lack of job opportunities and perceived government apathy. The vote reflects a collective feeling of anger and pain over multi-billion dollar scams, misgovernance and policy rut, and indicates that the Indian voter can rise above petty politics and regional identity in the presence of a strong national leader. In a nutshell, the Indian mandate of 2014 is one of hope and expectations.
And this is a good trend, because at stake is India’s future. India’s 4.8 percent growth has been reminiscent of the slowdown witnessed in the 1980s. The country needs at least an 8 percent growth rate to create new jobs for the 10 million youth who are joining the workforce every year, claim experts.
Clearly, reviving economic growth, creating jobs, reining in graft, improving infrastructure and industrial production need to be on the agenda of the incoming government.
The onus now lies with Modi and the BJP to live up to popular expectations and drive Indian growth with inclusive policies.

Bhuvnesh Mann to embark his journey in Ek Hasina Thi on Star Plus

17052014

Star Plus’s thriller drama Ek Hasina Thi is packed with men who have a lot of sinister elements about themselves like Shaurya Goenka (played by Vatsal Seth), Rajnath Goenka (played by Ayub Khan) and Akash (played by Mihir Mishra), etc. In the midst of all this darkness enters Bhuvanesh Mann who will strive to bring some light to the dark plot.
Like Vatsal and Mihir incidentally even Bhuvnesh makes his comeback to Indian Television with this show. He was last seen in a cameo role in Star Plus’ Maayke Se Bandhi Dor.’  However in Ek Hasina Thi he plays a very pivotal role which brings a very fascinating twist to the plot. He’ll be seen essaying the role of Dev Goenka who is the cousin of Shourya Goenka. He is elder to Shourya and technically the heir to the Goenka business empire. Unlike the other men on the show Dev is righteous, honest and courageous. Extremely qualified, Dev doesn’;t use his Goenka surname as a mark of privilege and entitlement. While he was away Nitya was mistreated and his concerns for Nitya made him guilty that he wasn’;t there for her is the driving force of his life.
Is he is determined to prove Nitya and Payal’s innocence and expose the real culprit? Will he recognize Durga Thakur’s true identity?

To find out if he will be able to do so please tune into Ek Hasina Thi on Star Plus Monday to Saturday at 8pm.

“Running is not just about the sport it is about the community”, says Lewis“

17052014
Carl Lewis-TCS World 10K Bangalore Event Ambassador with Anil Singh, MD, Procam International, Pramoter TCS World 10K Bangalore

Running is not just about the sport it is about the community”, says

“The running movement India is experiencing is remarkable. To see the progress that is taking place reminds me of the seventies in the United States when we had all those great runners. I can experience the same energy here. An event like this is so important because when you have a race with 25,000 runners, it is not just about the sport it is about the community. It means people in India are running”, said Carl Lewis, Sportsman of the Century and theInternational Event Ambassador of the TCS World 10K Bangalore 2014 at a Meet & Greet session at Sree Kanteerava Stadium, here, on Friday.

The star arrived in a BMW motorcade in the company of the event’s elite athletes Lucy Kabuu, Vincent Chepkok, Uwe Höfer, Director, Finance & Administration BMW Group India, and Anil Singh, MD, Procam International at the Stadium, the start-finish point of the 10K run. Lewis said he was amazed with the manner in which the running movement has caught up in the country. “15 to20 years from now, India will look back at its running heritage and say wow, today there are millions and millions of runners all around the country”, he exclaimed.

The winner of 10 spectacular Olympic medals that include nine incredible gold spoke about how his athletic career came to be and advanced, crediting his mother as the one person who pushed him to get involved in the sport. The 52-year-old former track and field star competed in four Olympic Games and won numerous medals after his breakthrough moment came when he was 16. “I was a very good sprinter and long jumper on the East Coast but at that particular meet in Memphis, I ran my personal best. I also jumped 25.9 for the first time. When I made that step, everything changed and I realized what I wanted to do”, he said.

Lewis stressed on the fact that running has the potential to transform one’s body and the fact that is it something anyone can do at his or her own pace. “It’s something that’s great not just for people but for families because everyone can do it together” said Lewis.

In his seventeen-year career, the dominant sprinter and long jumper often topped the world rankings in the 100-metre, 200-metre and long jump events beginning 1981 until the early 90s but still feels that the long jump was the engine of his international career and something that took him to the next level.

Even though Lewis won 10 spectacular Olympic medals, his last Gold stays closest to his heart. “I knew it was my last Olympic chance. It took a huge blessing and tremendous focus. I had a great coach, probably the greatest of the 20th century. It took all of that… every single person and every single ounce of energy to get that last one “said Lewis, one of the most renowned Olympians of all time, talking about winning his ninth and final Olympic Gold.

“I want to be remembered for what I stood for and not for what I ran”, said Lewis as he shared his thoughts about the running movement in India. Carl Lewis’ presence at the TCS World 10K Bangalore – as one of the most renowned Olympians of all time – will be a historic day for the Indian running community, that respects him as a great runner and a genuine human being.

The TCS 10K Bangalore has 50 per cent more female entries this time, proof of the fact that more and more individuals are taking up running in the country. “Running is important for the community and for the world. If you have a country this large, things that you do here affect the entire world. I think the movement is wonderful and I am happy to be here and think it is going to be a great race”, he said as he left.

The TCS World 10K Bangalore 2014, scheduled to be run on Sunday, May 18.

India withstands Nepal Challenge to go 3-0 in the 3rd SABA Championship 2014

17052014

Kathmandu, 16th May 2014: A determined India kept an inspired Nepal side at bay to emerge winners yet again in the 3rd South Asian Basketball Championship 2014 that is underway at the Dashrath Stadium complex, Tripureshwara in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Battling a hostile crowd, tournament favourites India beat hosts Nepal 74-41 to become the only side to enjoy a perfect 3-0 record. It will play minnows Maldives tomorrow morning at 11:00 am (Nepal time) in the final league match to complete the formalities of being declared the champion team in these SABA Championships and qualify for the Asia Cup in mid-July.
While an India win was never in doubt, thanks to its superior international experience at the elite Asia level, and its obvious height advantage through all five positions, today’s game against Nepal was tighter than expected. Buoyed by vociferous home support, Nepal managed to contain India to its lowest score of 74 points in this tournament and outscored India 17-15 in the second quarter, a feat no other team achieved prior to today.
India, though, kept its cool and relied on its excellent man to man defense and transition play to seal a commanding 74-41 win. While multiple Indian players contributed in the win, on the offensive end backup point guard Prakash Mishra’s outside shooting, power forward Amjyot Singh’s interior efficiency and Captain Vishesh Bhriguvanshi’s forceful layups despite contact stood out for India. Nepal was served by their emotional centre Ashim Shrestha and top scorer Binod Mahajan’s 13 points.

Mutharika wins Malawi’s disputed presidential vote

31052014

Mutharika wins Malawi
Democratic Progressive Party leader Peter Mutharika has been declared the winner of Malawi’s disputed presidential election after defeating President Joyce Banda.
Mutharika, the brother of former president Bingu wa Mutharika, took 36.4 per cent of the votes cast against Banda’s 20.2 per cent, the electoral commission said.
The results were announced on Friday minutes after the high court refused a last-ditch attempt to block their release and allow time for a recount.
Electoral commission Chief Maxon Mbendera declared Mutharika “president-elect” after last week’s vote, which Banda said was marred by “serious irregularities” and “null and void”.
The results showed that Banda was beaten into third place by Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), who garnered 27.8 per cent of the vote.
Party spokeswoman Jessie Kabwila told the MCP, which had made the bid for a recount, would challenge the results in court.
“We are disappointed because this is not a credible election. We will fight through legal means…we are not taking this lying down.”
Mutharika is set to take the reins of the impoverished southern African country under the shadow of a treason charge.
The 74-year-old brother of former president Bingu wa Mutharika is accused of attempting to conceal his brother’s death in office two years ago in an attempt to prevent Banda – then vice-president – from assuming power.
Banda prevailed and took office as decreed by the constitution, booting the former foreign minister out of the administration.
Mutharika, a law professor and former cabinet minister, faces additional counts of inciting a mutiny and conspiracy to commit a felony, along with other officials.
The trial is still pending, but analysts say it is likely the case will be set aside as Malawi’s presidents enjoy immunity from prosecution as long as they are in office.
There is speculation that once Mutharika is in power he could turn the tables on Banda and have her charged with corruption over a USD 30 million graft scandal dubbed “Cashgate”.
Banda has claimed the credit for uncovering the fraud, which saw aid money syphoned into top government officials’ pockets.
But critics, including Mutharika, say the funds went into her party’s election war-chest.
“Banda did everything in her power to prevent Mutharika from becoming president… and then bringing charges against her,” said Clive Gabay of the Queen Mary University of London.

Ukraine tells Russia to recognise new president

31052014
<br /> Ukraine tells Russia to recognise new president
Ukraine accused Russia on Saturday of unleashing a global propaganda campaign to persuade global powers not to recognise an election that gave the presidency to a pro-Western tycoon.
Washington for its part admitted to a “fundamental disagreement” with Russia and said President Barack Obama would meet Petro Poroshenko, whose May 25 presidential election win Moscow refuses to acknowledge, in Warsaw on Wednesday. The months-long fight for future of the ex-Soviet nation splintered between a more nationalist west and a heavily Russified southeast has killed more than 300 people and resurrected the geopolitical barriers of the Cold War.
Ukraine’s separatist insurgency only intensified after 48-year-old billionaire chocolate maker Poroshenko won 54.7 per cent of a ballot that was disrupted across swathes of the eastern rust belt.
Government forces reported suffering no casualties today while repelling two rebel attempts to recapture an airport in the eastern hub of Donetsk they had seized a day after the election at the cost of 40 fighters – most of them Russian nationals.
Ukraine’s acting foreign minister said Russia was now using every means at its disposal to unsettle the new Kiev leaders and regain control over its historic domain.
“Five days since elections, there has been no official recognition yet. Obviously, the Russian Federation doesn’t have legal grounds to question the election’s legitimacy,” Andriy Deshchytsya wrote in an opinion piece published in the edition of the English-language Kyiv Post.
“The massive… information campaign Kremlin has launched these days, with an avalanche of doubletalk and fake news, signals one thing — this is Russia’s last chance to try shifting the balance of international public opinion,” he wrote.
Russia yesterday accused Ukraine of breaching the 1949 Geneva Conventions protecting civilians in wartime by killing and wounding peaceful citizens during its seven-week “anti-terrorist operation” in the separatist industrial regions of Lugansk and Donetsk.

Modi abolished all the 30 GoMs and EGoMs

31052014

Dismantling a legacy of UPA rule, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday abolished all the 30 GoMs and EGoMs and told ministries and departments to take decisions on pending matters.
Announcing the decision to scrap nine Empowered Groups of Ministers and 21 Groups of Ministers, the PMO said this would expedite the process of decision-making and “usher in greater accountability in the system.”

The Ministries and Departments will now process the issues pending before EGoMs and GoMs and take appropriate decisions at the level of Ministries and Departments itself, said the statement.
It said wherever the ministries face difficulties, the Cabinet Secretariat and the Prime Minister’s Office will facilitate the decision-making process.
The statement announcing the abolition of EGoMS and GoMs termed it as “major move” to empower the ministries and Departments. Former Defence Minister A K Antony was heading most of the EGoMs.
The panels were formed to take decisions on issues like corruption, inter-state water disputes, administrative reforms and gas and telecom pricing.
EGoMs had the power to take decisions on the line of the Union Cabinet.
The recommendations of the GoMs were placed before the Cabinet for a final call.

DU VC needs to publicly explain the suspension issue

31052014

The Delhi University Vice-Chancellor owes a public explanation on how and at which level the decision to suspend five officials of the University’s School of Open Learning was taken.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is of the view that the University’s decision seriously compromises its autonomy and it is surprising that admission documents have been treated as confidential by the authorities to act in a completely unjustified manner against these officials.
The Vice Chancellor needs to explain what was the basis of the decision to suspend these officials ? Had any inquiry been conducted ? Who ordered the inquiry and what were its terms of reference ? Can an inquiry be completed within hours of a nws item appearing in a newspaper ?
Is it a case of the University authorities trying to please the new political masters since the matter pertained to the new union human resources development minister personally ?
It is shocking that the Delhi University authorities acted with lightning speed against the officials and it is beyond any reasonable understanding that they were suspended within hours of a news item having been published in a newspaper about the admission card of the HRD minister Ms Smriti Irani. It appears that in a desperate bid to score brownie points with the new regime at the Centre, the University authorities seem to have taken an arbitrary decision, which is against the very principle of natural justice.
The Vice-Chancellor, instead of promoting and encouraging transparency, appears to be hell bent on getting into the good books of the political masters in the new regime.
A prestigious  institution like the DU cannot be allowed to become a centre of political patronage and when the HRD minister herself has publicly stated that these officials should be reinstated, it becomes extremely important for the Vice Chancellor to come clean on the whole issue and let the students, academic community and the people know what actually led to the arbitrary and unjustified suspension of these officials.

Friday’s storm exposes all claims

31052014
 Friday’s storm exposes all claims
The loss of atleast nine innocent lives and largescale destruction caused by the sudden thunderstorm on Friday raises serious questions about the preparedness of the civic agencies in the national capital in dealing with such emergency situations created by natural disasters of any nature.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) condoles these untimely and sudden deaths and demands adequate steps to compensate their families who have lost their beloved ones for no fault of theirs. The administration must also ensure relief and rehabilitation of the affected families.
It is very surprising that the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) have been found wanting in dealing with such situations, and even storms of such minor intensity can throw life out of gear in the country’s capital.
Parts of the city remained without electricity for nearly 24 hours and it is beyond any reasonable understanding that who will take responsibility for the large-scale inconvenience caused to the people.
The AAP questions the state of affairs in the capital and wants to know from those running the city’s administration that who will be held accountable for the hardships faced by the public for no fault of theirs ?
A single thunderstorm which did not last for a long time has exposed the claims of those running the administration and civic agencies that everything was on track.
All possible steps should be immediately taken to ensure that such a sorry state of affairs is not repeated again. The images of uprooted trees across the city, metro trains being disrupted, ATMs not functioning, no electricity in several parts and massive traffic jams – will keep reminding the people about the nightmare faced by them on Friday evening.

Antibiotic Resistance

 Nksagar_1@yahoo.com -
A recent World Health Organization (WHO) report highlights how antibiotic resistance—the ability of bacteria to resist the effects of antibiotics they were previously sensitive to—is a threat without borders. And the use of antibiotics in the food industry means that humans and animals alike are exposed to antibiotics on a daily basis, making them less effective when we really need them.
The routine use of antibiotics in the feed and water of otherwise healthy chickens, cattle, and pigs since the 1950s has created a breeding ground for antibiotic resistant bacteria. A shocking eighty percent of all antibiotics used in the United States are fed to farm animals, not people, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Antibiotics have played a major role in protecting public health and have saved millions of lives. However, inappropriate use of antibiotics now threatens their effectiveness, the ability of humans and animals alike to fight off infection, and costs lives.
According to the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), in 2010, almost 52 percent of chicken breasts tested were contaminated with antibiotic resistant E. coli. And in three states drug-resistant bacteria have been found in drinking water and detected in the air downwind from factory farms. Drug-resistant infections cost Americans up to US$26 billion a year in additional health costs.
Because of serious public health risks, there is a push to end use of low dose antibiotics in livestock. Organizations like the Center for a Liveable Future (CLF) have been promoting research and developing communication on global health and the environment for a long time.
And CLF is helping eaters better understand the impact of their food choices. “If enough of us on the demand side create influence through our choices, we will transform the food system, and the supply side will follow,” said Dr. Bob Lawrence, Director of CLF.
There are dozens of other organizations working tirelessly to gather evidence, inform policymakers, and promote more sustainable methods of food production.
Alliance for a Prudent Use of Antibiotics (APUA)— APUA’s motto is “preserving the power of antibiotics.” Gathering experts in a wide range of fields- from medicine to economics- APUA conducts research and educates on antimicrobial treatment and resistance at the grassroots and global levels.
Animal Welfare Approved (AWA)— Founded in 2006, AWA is a food label for meat and dairy products guaranteeing the highest animal welfare and environmental standards. The organization supports independent family farmers who provide their animals with continual access to pasture, as well as the opportunity to perform natural and instinctive behaviors essential to their health and well-being. Following AWAstandards, farmers can avoid routine antibiotics and other chemical inputs on the farm.
Center for Food Safety— The Center promotes organic agriculture and opposes harmful food production methods such as factory farming. Involved in the Meat Without Drugs campaign, they launched a petition calling on U.S. pork producers to stop using Ractopamine, a drug banned or strictly limited in 160 countries. You can also take part in this online action by calling on Congress to tackle antibiotic resistance.
Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI)— Founded in 1971, CSPI fights for food safety, nutrition and health. In 2013, CSPI released an “Antibiotic Resistance in Foodborne Pathogens” report that details antibiotic-related outbreaks from 1973 to 2011. CSPI also supports the Meat Without Drugs and Keep Antibiotics Working campaigns.
Compassion in World Farming (CIWF)— CIWF campaigns internationally against animal cruelty in farming practices. Part of the Save Our Antibiotics Alliance along with the Soil Association and Sustain in the United Kingdom, CIWF published the Case Study of a Health Crisis that details the health implications of the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture.
Consumers Union— Working for a food system that assures “food is safe, affordable, healthful and processed in a sustainable manner,” Consumers Union is the co-instigator of the Meat Without Drugs campaign along with Fix Food. The campaign aims at raising awareness about antibiotic resistance and is calling big food retailers, specifically Trader Joe’s, to stop selling meat raised with antibiotics.
Fix Food— This American nonprofit is dedicated to changing the food system by raising awareness and partnering with leading organizations. Fix Food is also part of the Meat Without Drugs campaign.
Food Animal Concern Trust (FACT)— FACT is a research-driven nonprofit organization founded in 1982. It aims to raise awareness about animal welfare in agriculture and consequent public health issues. FACT opposes, among other things, the extra label use of antibiotics, which is a drug approved for humans and used for cattle. FACT provides leadership for the Keep Antibiotics Working campaign.

SIT on black money: If there is political will, it should go for gold and a big haul

31052014

By Prof R. Vaidyanathan    First Post—FirstBiz—31-05-2014
More than six years ago, in February 2008, the German authorities had collected information about illegal money stashed away by citizens of various countries in a Liechtenstein bank. The German Finance Minister offered to share the names of these account-holders with any government interested in them. The UPA-1 government, unfortunately, did not act for many months and, after much prodding by the Opposition, asked for the list in late 2008.
A German intelligence agency appears to have paid an unnamed informer more than $6 million for this confidential and secret data about clients of the LGT group, a bank owned by the Liechtenstein Prince’s family. The revelations have already led to the resignation of the head of Deutsche Post, which is currently the world’s largest logistics company. Liechtenstein leaders were furious and have focused all their ire on the theft of the data rather than on the facts of the case.
The German list contained the names of 1,400 clients of the Liechtenstein bank, of whom 600 were Germans. A spokesman for the German finance ministry, Thorstein Albig, had said in March 2008 that information on the other accounts would be shared without charging any fees. Finland, Sweden, and Norway quickly obtained the data, but  our government began pussyfooting around this issue. If it had genuinely wanted to act against black money, it should have immediately despatched senior officials/ministers to get the names. Pushed and prodded by the Opposition and the media, when the government finally moved, it got nearly 100 Indian names – but those names have been kept a secret.
This writer, who has been studying tax havens for more than a decade, wrote in April 2009 (in the journal Eternal India, published by India First Foundation) about the need to get back the illegal deposits kept by Indians in various tax havens, including Liechtenstein. A public interest litigation was then filed by Ram Jethmalani and others in the Supreme Court, to which the government responded that it was taking steps to recover such amounts. It had also mentioned that the German government had given a list of people who had kept money in the LGT Bank of Liechtenstein (May 2009). The government’s response also said that steps were being taken in the case of Hasan Ali Khan, a Pune horse-breeder, who was alleged to have indulged in several illegal transactions through the UBS Bank of Switzerland.
In the meanwhile, the then Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, LK Advani, had constituted a committee consisting of S Gurumurthy, well-known Chartered Accountant, Ajit Doval, the current National Security Advisor, lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani, and this writer. The report of the committee was also used by Ram Jethmalani in his PIL filed with the Supreme Court.
The government maintained that it cannot reveal the names received from Germany since it had obtained the same under the double taxation avoidance treaty. The point is: why did the government ask for information under the double-tax treaty with Germany when the issue – stolen data from the Liechtenstein bank by Germany – was unconnected to the treaty? Where is the issue of confidentiality vis-a-vis criminals? Actually, it is wealth kept illegally in the bank in Liechtenstein, and the money does not even concern Germany.
The double-tax treaty generally prevents the use of information supplied under the treaty for any purpose other than the levy and recovery of tax. It is doubtful whether the income tax department can share the details it has secured under the treaty with the Enforcement Directorate or the National Investigation Agency which tracks terror cases, or the NSA. That is why the Supreme Court had refused to regard it purely an issue of tax evasion.
The finance ministry says it has the names but will not reveal them. But is this right? The accounts are those of international crooks who have deprived our land of huge financial resources through capital flight. It is an unpatriotic act which can be equated to financial terrorism. Domestic black money (that is untaxed income) is merely a no-confidence motion against the government’s tax policies, but black money in tax havens abroad amounts to no-confidence against the country – which is akin to treason.
A report in The Economic Times dated 4 June 2009 said that of the 50 Indians who have stashed funds in LGT Bank, 25 belong to Mumbai. The tax authorities have reopened assessments of these 25 tax evaders under section 148 of the Income Tax Act. This implies that the government is treating it as tax evasion and not capital flight and a crime against the country. But on 19 January 2011 – after two years of waiting – the Supreme Court made a historic observation about this shameful phenomenon of Indian funds being kept illegally abroad and the obstructionist attitude of the central government in unravelling the truth.
A report in The Hindu quoted the court as saying that black money stashed abroad by Indians was “pure and simple theft of national money.” The court “questioned the Centre’s approach to tackling this menace and retrieving the huge amounts kept in foreign banks. When Solicitor-General Gopal Subramaniam furnished in a sealed cover a list of 26 names who had accounts with (the) Liechtenstein Bank, a bench of Justices B Sudershan Reddy and SS Nijjar was not convinced of the steps taken by the government for getting back black money. Justice Reddy, after perusing the list, told the SG: ‘This is all the information you have or you have something more? We are talking about huge money. It is a plunder of the nation. It is pure and simple theft of national money. We are talking about mind-boggling crime. We are not on (the) niceties of various treaties.”
The court then insisted on the formation of a special investigation team (SIT) with ex-Supreme Court judge Jeevan Reddy as Chairman, assisted by Justice MB Shah, and asked the government to share details about the Liechtenstein list. The UPA government dilly-dallied and used every ruse in the legal book to buy time. But the Supreme Court was very upset and told the government that it can be hauled up for contempt of court. The court, in its order of 1 May 2014, had given the government three weeks’ time to issue a notification for setting up an SIT to be presided over by Justice MB Shah (since Justice Jeevan Reddy had declined to head it for personal reasons), with retired Justice Arijit Pasayat as vice-chairman, to guide and direct the investigation.
The three weeks ended on 22 May and extended to 27 May due to a change in the government. Hence, the first decision of the new government was about the SIT. It was a decision pushed down the throat of the government of India by the court due to the sustained efforts of Ram Jethmalani, represented by Anil Dhavan, and armed with reports of this writer. The SIT will consist of the Chief of the Financial Intelligence Unit, the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, a Deputy Governor of the RBI, the IB Director, the Narcotics Bureau chief, and the head of the Enforcement Directorate. The group will also have access to the accounts of HSBC Bank, Geneva, details of which were given by the French government.
The SIT is essentially a group of bureaucrats with varying degrees of expertise about tax havens. This is mainly for illicit money kept abroad and not for domestic black money. Most of the double tax treaties which the UPA-2 entered into are prospective in nature and the task of looking into past illegal funds is complicated.
The group should distinguish between pure tax evasion (let us call it vegetarian black money) and funds connected to terror/arms smuggling/narcotics (say, non-veg black money). The former is easy to focus on and can be dealt with through penalties. A recent Supreme Court judgment, which says that “that Indian resident beneficiaries shall not be taxed on the income of an offshore discretionary trust as long as the trustees do not distribute income to the beneficiaries,” may help many in the first category.
The best way to proceed is to have a joint sitting of Parliament and pass a resolution stating that “any funds abroad held by Indian nationals belong to the Republic of India” unless they have been kept abroad under legal rules and regulations. Armed with such a resolution and recent agreements entered into by Switzerland and Singapore with OECD countries, the SIT can go for gold! Actually, the SIT should be willing to use the concept of sama/dhana/bheda/dhanda in achieving its task – many secretive jurisdictions, including Switzerland, can and should be arm-twisted to part with information. After all they have huge investments in India
It is also necessary to consider the gold/diamonds/precious items kept by Indians in the lockers of banks in tax havens abroad. The road ahead for the recovery of illegal money stashed abroad is full of pot holes and craters, but we Indians have a way of navigating such impediments. What is needed is the political will for the same.

Words of Wisdom – GAIL Voice

Posted: 31 May 2014 02:33 AM PDT
Recently a UK based energy journal “LNG Magazine” published an article “A passage to India” on the Indian LNG demand and GAIL’s efforts towards meeting the same with inputs from Mr. Prabhat Singh; director, marketing , GAIL (India) Limited.
The article talked about the energy demand and supply shortage in India and around the globe. Involvement of natgas in India’s energy mix is 11% whereas it accounts to 24% in the global scenario. As of now, domestic production contributes 73% of the total supply of the gas. The gap between supply and demand is growing with the intense development and rising conscience to go green in the nation. GAIL has stepped up to the challenge and has assumed a key role in development of natgas market in India in meeting rising demand. It has also been vigilant about securing deals with the foreign nations as well. The long term deals with Qatar, Yemen, Nigeria, Algeria, Trinidad & Tobago, Norway, Oman, UAE etc. shows the efforts of the company in doing so.
The article basically consisted of three important constraints:
Imports
Indian natural gas market has become a global attraction because of its demographical location as well as rising domestic demand. GAIL has secured part of natgas supplies from countries like Russia and Turkey and is constantly examining potential LNG hubs.
Business & Sustainability
GAIL has been consistently trying to reduce the carbon footprint in the production process and with usage of renewable energy in the production process it depicts the strong willingness of the motive. Alongside the busy operations GAIL with its CSR projects has also been ensuring the sustainable development of underprivileged the needy communities.
Future Projects
GAIL has constantly trying to fill the gap between supply and demand in the country. Company is pursuing regional cooperation with fellow Asian nations. GAIL has also been looking to diversify its operations and in the process has also commissioned wind energy projects in Gujarat. Future plans are to concentrate on the renewabels starting with solar & wind energy.
With strong words from the marketing manager we are assured that the future demands will be met and India may soon achieve energy security.

While the nation seeks a better a better future, its the youth who hold the foundations of the brighter tomorrow being anticipated. Here is a true story of a champion who did not give up when knocked down by life but instead bounced back with a bang

‘A lesson learnt, a career achieved’
As I look back to my school days, I remember that I wasn’t much into studies. I preferred watching TV and being involved in sports activities. I belong to a middle class family. My parents always tried to make me understand the importance of a good career but I couldn’t drive myself to study in those initial days. However, taking the Cyber Olympiad in 6th standard made me realize where I stood when it came to knowledge – nowhere. As such, I couldn’t even secure a satisfactory position in the Olympiad even at the district level. I used to think I was far better than others, but the results said otherwise. I felt as if I was standing at the bottom and others were moving to the top, though my parents and my sisters encouraged me a lot. It was because of their efforts that I was finally able to recognize my potential. When I was in 9th standard, my father expired and the entire burden fell on my mother. I started paying attention to my studies but one thing that persisted in my mind was on improving my knowledge without worrying about my class rank. I got an opportunity to be a part of my school NCC team, where I gave my 100 percent as I felt it is most important to be sincere and dedicated to whatever one takes up. I qualified for mains level in NTSE and scored 92% in 10th standard. It was around that time that I decided to be an engineer and set my sight on IIT. However, it was during my preparations that I realized that the method of study was wrong. Coaching basically meant making students cram the entire study material, ignoring individual capability. This was very upsetting. Then I came to know about the Super 30 coaching sponsored by GAIL India limited in co-operation with CSRL. Here the teaching pattern was totally different. I wouldn’t even call it coaching. In fact, it was more like a home for me where I was provided proper guidance by well experienced and talented teachers. The approach was basic and simple but the result was undoubtedly awesome. The IIT aspirants just need to be conceptual and this is a prominent feature of the Super 30 art of teaching. Today, I am most content. My father is not here to see me, but he would have been proud to see me an IITian. My mother, sisters, maternal uncles and two of my true friends never let me feel his absence. I express my deep gratitude to Abhayanand Sir, Krishnamurti Sir, Chandra Sir and Phurkan Sir and the whole GAIL and CSRL team for their tremendous efforts and the patience they showed for me, enabling me reach this successful station in life.
Apar continuously maintained a CGPA of 8+ and has secured 133 score in GATE examination. Now he has also secured 1st position in SAIL Management Trainee exam. GAIL is proud of him and wishes him all the best for the future.
We hope that with project Utkarsh we keep on helping talents like Apar in the future too.

A Facebook page “Find Gareth Huntley” has also been started, warning people of fake fundraising accounts.

Turkish police cordon off central Istanbul to stop demonstrations 1yr after Gezi Park unrest

Metro station Taksim has also been closed. According to local media, 25,000 officers were deployed on Saturday. The measure comes as Taksim Solidarity, the group that organized last year’s protest movement, called for a demonstration on Taksim at 7 pm (1600 GMT). Israeli security forces in the West Bank caught a Palestinian wearing an explosive belt on Friday, officials said. Border police near the Palestinian city of Nablus had been suspicious of the man who was wearing a coat on a hot spring day, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. “The forces stopped him and asked the suspect to remove his clothes. He was wearing a bomb-belt,” Reuters quoted Rosenfeld as saying. The man, believed to be in his 20s, was in a sensitive area in the West Bank, which has a number of Jewish settlements and a large security presence.

Indonesia testing Cadbury products after Malaysia protests

Indonesia is testing products made by British confectioner Cadbury to check they comply with Islamic standards, officials said on Friday. The move follows a scandal in neighboring Malaysia, after two chocolate varieties were found to be contaminated with pork DNA, Reuters said. “It is prudent to do a test on the other variants to see if they also have traces of the pig DNA,” said Roy Alexander Sparingga, head of Indonesia’s Food and Drug Monitoring Agency. Some Muslim groups in Malaysia have called for a boycott on all products made by Cadbury over the ingredient banned under Islamic dietary laws.

Military to set up ‘reconciliation centers’ in Thailand

Thailand’s military said on Friday it will set up “reconciliation centers” across the country. They are aimed at healing a decade of political division that has often spilled over into violence, Reuters said. Army chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha, who took power in a coup on May 22, said he had to end the struggle between the royalist establishment and an upstart power network headed by billionaire former premier Thaksin Shinawatra. Some loyalists of the self-exiled Thaksin expect the army to bring in electoral and other reforms over the coming months aimed at ending Thaksin’s political influence.

Bulgarian center-left govt survives no-confidence vote

The center-left government of Bulgarian Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski survived a no-confidence vote in parliament on Friday, AFP said. The motion failed in a vote of 116 to 93 with the backing of the Socialist BSP party, their liberal partner Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) and independent lawmakers. This was the fourth such motion submitted by the conservative opposition. It accused Oresharski’s cabinet of lacking a clear strategy for the country’s troubled energy sector and taking closed-door decisions on major projects.

Court frees 25 Cambodians charged with garment strike offences

A Cambodian court found 25 people guilty on Friday of acts of violence during strikes by garment workers. However, all were given suspended sentences and freed, Reuters said. The ruling is likely to be welcomed by global manufacturers operating in the country. The Phnom Penh Municipal Court judges convicted the workers, trade unionists and protesters of intentional violence including damage to public property during strikes in November last year and January 2014.

Police fire warning shots to stop protesters in C. Africa capital

Security forces fired warning shots as protesters in Bangui demanded the resignation of the interim government and the removal of foreign troops from the Central African Republic on Friday, AFP said. Troops and police stopped the protesters gathering in the capital, who numbered in the thousands, and the demonstrators dispersed around an hour later. Bursts of automatic weapons fire were also heard in the central Bangui neighborhood that is home to the presidential palace, and in the area of the airport. The capital has experienced an upsurge in violence in recent days.

Hagel to discuss progress of Afghanistan forces

2062014

Hagel to discuss progress of Afghanistan forces
US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel flew to Afghanistan on Sunday to talk to commanders about the progress of the Afghan forces as the US looks pull all but about 10,000 troops out of the country by the end of the year.
His visit comes in the emotional aftermath of the successful release of America’s only prisoner of war in Afghanistan, Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, and just days after President Barack Obama announced the drawdown that will leave fewer than 1,000 US forces in the country by the end of 2016.
Obama was at the same Bagram base just a week ago. Hagel told reporters traveling with him that he wants to hear about what the Afghans are doing and how well they are improving their air force. He also wants to learn more about the government’s ability to sustain and equip its forces.
Despite optimistic reports from top military commanders about how far the Afghan security forces have come, there are still nagging doubts and frustration with the slow progress the higher level headquarters and ministries have made in setting up long-range budgeting and logistics capabilities.
While they say the Afghans can fight, there is concern about the government’s ability to ensure that over time troops have the food, fuel, weapons and other equipment they need. “I’m confident they will be able to stand on their own,” said Hagel.
He also will meet with a gathering of US troops, and a prime topic will be the release of Bergdahl yesterday. The Taliban turned the 28-year-old soldier over to US special operations forces in eastern Afghanistan. In exchange the US released five detainees from the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detention center, and transferred them to Qatar.
The Afghanistan stop marks the first of several days Hagel will spend talking with his commanders and other nations’ defense ministers about the troop drawdown and the future of Afghanistan.
He planned to gather with other defense chiefs this week at a NATO meeting in Brussels. Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, the top US military commander in Afghanistan is expected to also attend the NATO meeting as well as Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove, the top NATO commander.
Hagel has acknowledged there are still many unanswered questions about the drawdown, including how many of the nearly 10,000 US forces remaining in the Afghanistan next year will be devoted to counterterrorism missions.
He said it also was unclear how many troops NATO and other international partners would contribute and what exactly those forces would do.

Chandrasekhara Rao sworn-in as first CM of Telangana

Chandrasekhara Rao sworn-in as first CM of Telangana
Telangana came into existence as the 29th state of India today and TRS supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) was sworn in as its first Chief Minister, capping the decades-old struggle in the region for carving out a separate state from Andhra Pradesh.
60-year-old KCR took oath as Chief Minister along with his son K T Rama Rao, nephew T Harish Rao and nine others administered by Governor E S L Narasimhan at Raj Bhavan.
Celebrations erupted in the state to mark the historic event that came after a long-drawn-out process of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.
Nine other Cabinet Ministers were sworn in the new state -Mohammed Mahmood Ali, T Rajaiah, Nayani Narasimha Reddy, Eatela Rajender, Pocharam Srinivasa Reddy, T Padma Rao, P Mahender Reddy, Jogu Ramanna and G Jagadish Reddy.
The swearing-in ceremony was not without controversies, as Chief Minister-designate of successor State of Andhra Pradesh N Chandrababu Naidu skipped it, in what is seen as first signs of discord between the two “regional satraps”.
Sources said Telugu Desam Party President was peeved that there was neither a personal invitation nor a telephone call; it was said to be a routine invitation from the administration.
Naidu, who was swept to power in the successor State of Andhra Pradesh, is slated to be sworn in as Chief Minister on June eight at a ceremony to be held between Vijayawada and Guntur.
Welcoming the formation of Telangana, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised complete central support to help take the state to newer heights of progress.
He congratulated KCR on becoming the first Chief Minister of the 29th state and expressed best wishes to its people.
President’s Rule imposed in united Andhra Pradesh was revoked partially to facilitate swearing in of a government in the state.
However, it would continue to be in force in the residuary Andhra Pradesh till Naidu takes over as Chief Minister.
Earlier, Narasimhan was sworn in as the first Governor of Telangana.
Andhra Pradesh High Court Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta administered the oath to Narasimhan, who will be the common Governor of Telangana and residuary Andhra Pradesh.
Hyderabad will be the joint capital of Telangana and residuary Andhra Pradesh.
KCR started his career with the youth Congress party in Medak district, controlled by Sanjay Gandhi in the 1970s.
He joined the TDP in 1983 and contested against A. Madan Mohan and lost that election.
KCR won four consecutive Assembly elections from Siddipet between 1985 and 1999. He also served as the deputy speaker of the Andhra Assembly.
TRS was part of the United Progressive Alliance coalition government, led by Congress.
The party later withdrew from the coalition, saying that the Alliance was not taking forward its demand for a separate Telangana state.
In 2004, he fought the Lok Sabha polls and went on to become a Union Cabinet minister of Labour and Employment in the UPA-1 government at the Centre.
He resigned in 2006 over the Telangana issue. In 2009, he fought and won the Mahbubnagar Lok Sabha by-election for the TRS.
The party fought the general elections as part of the opposition coalition. TRS secured majority in recent Legislative Assembly elections by winning 63 of the 119 seats in Telangana region.
Euphoria swept the new state with TRS activists and supporters painting Hyderabad pink, the colour of TRS flag, by installing huge cut-outs, banners, festoons and balloons hailing their leader.
Cultural programmes have been planned and a dazzling display of fireworks would be held tonight at People’s Plaza and Tank Bund at the picturesque Hussain Sagar lake to celebrate the occasion.

MHA: why SCs-STs Act not slapped against Badaun accused

MHA asks UP why SCs-STs Act not slapped against Badaun accused
The Home Ministry on Monday shot off a letter to Uttar Pradesh government asking it to explain why the stringent clauses of Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act were not slapped on those accused of raping and murdering of two cousins in Badaun.
“The law is there. It is to protect the SCs and STs from atrocities. It was a clear case of atrocity on a weaker section of the society. We do not know why the state government has not slapped it (clauses) against the accused,” Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju told reporters in New Delhi.
He said the letter to the Uttar Pradesh government has been sent on Monday.
“It was a heinous crime and the guilty must be given exemplary punishment,” he said.
Five accused– three brothers Pappu Yadav, Awadhesh Yadav and Urvesh Yadav and constables Chhatrapal Yadav and Sarvesh Yadav —have been arrested in the case that has sparked nation-wide outrage.
The two teenage girls, who were cousins aged 14 and 15 years, were allegedly gangraped and murdered with their bodies found hanging from a mango tree in a village in Ushait area in Badaun.
The girls went missing on May 2

Bureaucrats should be role models of good governance: Modi

Bureaucrats should be role models of good governance: Modi
With Good days ahead slogan, government is in deep slumber  the Delhi city ,the pride of nation is hit  by storm. The  blocking of the  the drive ways by the falling trees on services lanes at planned  colonies and electrical supply disruptions therein the government still unable to take speedy actions to clear the roads blocks and trees lay in red tape. When shall the Good days come  and this slogan mongering nation when will we fall in line to do our duty. However  the sermons go on each day for pampering each other.
Modi government on Monday initiated steps to reorient the work culture of bureaucrats with ministers asking officials to address people’s concerns in a polite, decent and caring manner and be the role models of good governance
“All of us will have to look at ourselves as truly public servants in our effort to change the image of the government, change the image of ‘Babu log’ as people call us,” Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy Minister Piyush Goel told the officers of the three Ministries. He was addressing a conclave ‘Sampark, Samanvya avam Samvad’ (Connect, Coordinate and Communicate) being organised for the officers of Ministries of Power, Coal and New and Renewable Energy.
Goel asked the officers to “give people confidence that we are responsive to their needs, we are concerned about their problems and we will act judiciously, in a transparent manner”.
He said that the concerns of the people should be addressed “in a polite, decent and very caring fashion” so that people start looking up at “you as a role model of good governance”.
“I would request you to look at this proceedings with a bit seriousness,” he told the officers, who were given the copies of “My Autobiography” –the second autobiography of Alex Ferguson, a former Scottish football manager and player who successfully managed Manchester United from 1986 to 2013.
“I am getting so many phone calls telling me that three departments alone can add between one-and-a-half to two per cent to the economic growth….We do not have the luxury of time. Result should be evident within this year,” Goel said.
Addressing the officials, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar, who was the chief guest at the conclave, said the BJP-led NDA government is for poor and bureaucrats should serve them with compassion.
“We are for poor. They are the new aspirational class. They have given us mandate and we have to serve them. …Compassion and feeling for the people, oneness with the people, duties for the people…That is I think that has to be the base of every officer,” Javadekar said.

U N condemns gang-rape and murder of teenage girls in Uttar Pradesh and calls for justice

2062014
Statement by Lise Grande, United Nations Resident Coordinator; Dr Rebecca R Tavares, Representative, UN Women’s India Multi Country Office and Louis-Georges Arsenault, UNICEF Representative to India.
New Delhi, 1 June 2014: The UN in India condemns the brutal gang-rape and murder of two teenaged girls on the night of May 28 in Katra village in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun district and calls for immediate action against the perpetrators and to address violence against women and girls across India.
Ending violence against women and girls is a fundamental goal of the United Nations. The UN system in India stands united with people across the country to do what it takes to ensure that every woman and every girl can live safely and with dignity everywhere.
“There should be justice for the families of the two teenaged girls and for all the women and girls from lower caste communities who are targeted and raped in rural India. Violence against women is not a women’s issue, it’s a human rights issue,” said Lise Grande, Resident Coordinator of the UN system in India.
“Every girl and woman should be able to live safely, feel protected and grow up free of violence,” stated Dr. Rebecca Tavares, UN Women’s Representative in India. “Amongst the many actions that need to be taken, the UN encourages the speedier application of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 2013, including the establishment of the one-stop crisis centres. The justice system is key to addressing the problem.”
“Many progressive reforms and changes have resulted following the brutal gang-rape and murder of a young woman in Delhi in December 2013 and the historic Justice Verma Committee report,” stressed Lise Grande. “But having the laws in place are only one part of the solution – their implementation also matters as does changing mind-sets. Violence against women and girls is preventable, not inevitable. Sustained implementation of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012 and the setting up of Special Courts and child friendly procedures for victims under 18 years of age are also key priorities.”

The latest brutal act of violence against the girls in UP also highlights the dangers girls and women all over India are exposed to due to the lack of toilets. Louis-Georges Arsenault, UNICEF’s Representative to India stressed that: “Around 65% of rural population in India defecates in the open and women and girls are expected to go out at night. This does not only threaten their dignity, but their safety as well.”

Turkey protesters clash with forces

1062014

People across Turkey took to the streets on Saturday to mark the first anniversary of large anti-government demonstrations. The rallies triggered a fresh round of clashes with security forces.
Authorities deployed about 25,000 police around Taksim Square in central Istanbul following appeals for a large rally.
The police cordoned off the area, and used tear gas and water cannons to prevent demonstrators from entering the square. The measures ignited clashes.
Local media report some people sustained injuries and about 80 people were detained.
There were also calls for major rallies in other parts of the country, including the capital Ankara and the western city of Izmir.
A protest against the redevelopment of Taksim Square in May last year triggered nationwide demonstrations against the administration of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The Erdogan government drew sharp public criticism in March when it blocked access to online services, including the social networking site Twitter.
Last month’s deadly mine explosion in the western region also prompted criticism of the government over its lax safety measures. More than 300 people died in the blast.

It will be lifted in Pattaya, Chonburi, Samui, Surat Thani and Phuket “to counter any impact it may have on the tourism industry,” the council said in a televised statement. It failed to mention the capital, Bangkok, in the measure.

Japan has temporarily suspended official development aid to Vietnam over a bribery case, officials said Tuesday. Fresh yen loans and funding for an ongoing urban railway project have been frozen. The decision was taken after six Vietnamese railway officials were detained over allegations of corrupt payments, AFP reported, citing a statement by Japan’s Foreign Ministry. In March, Japanese media reported that the national tax agency had flagged up 100 million yen (US$100,000) worth of payments that could not be properly accounted for. Detroit museum’s art collection could be sold off to pay city’s debt

Detroit city bankruptcy managers have begun to review the monetary value of the 66,000 pieces of art currently held in the Detroit Institute of Arts. The bankrupt city initially estimated that only 1,700 or so of the museum’s pieces would be auctioned off to help pay off Detroit’s considerable debt, although the Detroit News discovered that appraisers are now examining the Institute’s entire collection. The legal fight is far from over, although attorneys have speculated that the city could reap anywhere between $454 million and $867 million, depending on how many works were purchased with public funds and if they are allowed to sell artwork previously donated by private citizens. Any deal that would spare the collection is contingent on approval from the Michigan state legislature and a majority vote by city pensioners.

Obama assure friends security condemned Russian “aggression” in Ukraine.

4062014

U.S. President Barack Obama meets with Ukraine President-elect Petro Poroshenko in Warsaw June 4, 2014. (Reuters/Kevin Lamarque)

Obama assured US diligent help and security to his friends at need of the hour to preserve their sovereignty.
Speaking in Warsaw to mark 25 years since the fall of communism in Poland, he hailed Polish democracy as a beacon for neighboring Ukraine.”How can we allow the dark tactics of the 20th Century to define the 21st?” he said.
Mr Obama met Ukraine President-elect Petro Poroshenko, and pledged support for plans to restore peace to the country.
Mr Obama called Mr Poroshenko a “wise selection” to lead Ukraine, and said the nation could become a vibrant, thriving democracy if the world community stood behind it.
US has pledged additional military help to Ukraine as well as potential training of its law enforcement and military personnel. President Obama’s vows comes as Kiev continues air strikes as a part of its military operation in southeastern Ukraine.
Since March, the White House has approved more than $23 million in security assistance to Ukraine. Now the US is providing additional $5 million aid for “the provision of body armor, night vision goggles and additional communications equipment.”
The White House said other aid for Ukraine has included 300,000 ready-to-eat meals and financing for medical supplies, helmets, hand-held radios and other equipment.
“The United States is absolutely committed to standing behind the Ukrainian people not just in the coming days, weeks, but in the coming years,” Obama said.
Obama said it was critical that other countries also support Poroshenko and Ukraine’s new government, including by training its military and police.
Obama’s statement comes a day after he pledged to invest $1 billion in stepping up the US military presence in Eastern Europe amid the Ukrainian crisis.
US has deployed 600 troops for military drills in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland.
“As allies, we have a solemn duty – a binding treaty obligation – to defend your territorial integrity. And we will,” Obama said, according to Reuters. “Poland will never stand alone. Estonia will never stand alone. Latvia will never stand alone. Lithuania will never stand alone. Romania will never stand alone.”
At a separate meeting in Brussels, NATO has said that as an alliance it will not provide military assistance to Ukraine, although individual member states can do so.
NATO said it would “will finalize a comprehensive package of long-term measures to make Ukraine’s reforms more effective and its armed forces stronger” later this month.
“We agreed that we will continue to reinforce NATO’s collective defense with more air and sea patrols and more exercises and training from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean,” NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said.
President Obama has called Poroshenko’s victory in the May 25 election a “wise selection.”
