Passing the Disabilities Rights Bill will change the lives of 70 Million people. Ask Kamal Nath to reconvene the Parliament to pass the Bill.

Dear Naresh -

I am a person with disability. After years of hard work, I am now an international Para-Athlete representing India. There are 70 million people with disabilities in India.
For the first time in Indian history, people with disabilities would have had a chance to get equal opportunities to work and live if the Disabilities Rights Bill had been passed.
Naresh, the Bill was to be passed in the winter session of the Parliament. But the Parliament session ended abruptly on 18th December, just before the Bill was tabled.
started this petition on Change.org, telling the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kamal Nath to live up to the promise the Government has made to this community.
We want him to ensure that the Parliament will be reconvened in February for a few days and the Disabilities Bill be taken up by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for enactment.
It will take them just one day to change the lives of millions of people. The Ministers need to know that thousands of people across India are watching them.
Naresh, 70 million differently abled people need your support. Sign this petition and share it with your friends and family.
Thank you,
Pradeep Raj via Change.org

Zee Classic pays an ode to the genius filmmaker with a
month-long festival ‘Benegal @ Work’

Launched in April 2004, Zee Classic is India';s only Hindi movie channel that shows films from the classic era of Hindi cinema. In addition to bringing alive the magic of these evergreen masterpieces, the channel constantly endeavours to also acquaint viewers with the greats who made a significant contribution to  this Golden era and made the industry what it is, thereby standing true to its promise of bringing forth ‘Timeless Movies. Timeless Moments’!

The legendary man Zee Classic salutes this month was awarded the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. A recipient of the highest honour for an Indian filmmaker - the ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award’, he has walked away with the National Award 7 times over for his films. Critical acclaim, standing ovations at the most prestigious film festivals, the most esteemed awards  and rave reviews from the more discerning segments of the audience have been the pillars that have built the prolific film career of the legendary Shyam Benegal. Ushering an all-new era of alternate Indian Cinema with his very first four feature films, Benegal has truly been a path-breaker all along. Being a channel that showcases and celebrates classic films, highlighting their relevance to the youth of today, it is only befitting that Zee Classic raises a toast to the genius of Benegal, a man whose body of work shaped the contours of cinema in the 70’s and 80’s. Starting 11th January, Zee Classic will air ‘Benegal @ Work’, a showcase of some of Shyam Benegal’s finest masterpieces … some of the most impactful films that define his style and let audiences experience the magic of his storytelling.

The festival kicks off with Benegal’s debut film Ankur’, a story of economic and sexual exploitation set in his home stateAndhra Pradesh. The film introduced prodigal actors such as Shabana Azmi and Anant Nag and won Benegal the 1975National Film Award. Shabana won the National Film Award for Best Actress. Benegal’s ‘Trikal’ captures the transition of Goa from being a Portuguese colony to a district governed by India. Liberally sprinkled with dashes of humor, this is a fast-paced comedy about a family and their friends who lived in Goa through this interesting phase of its evolution. On 25thJanuary, catch ‘Bhumika – The Role’, a film broadly based on the memoirs of the well-known Marathi stage and screen actress of the 1940s, Hansa Wadkar who led a flamboyant and unconventional life … the film focuses on an individual';s search for identity and self-fulfillment. The immensely talented Smita Patil gave one of the most inspired performances of her career, transforming herself in its course from a vivacious teenage girl to a wiser but deeply wounded middle-aged woman. ‘Mandi’ is a satirical comedy on politics and prostitution. Based on a classic Urdu short story Aanandi by Pakistani writer Ghulam Abbas and starring acting heavyweights such as  Shabana AzmiNaseeruddin Shah and Smita Patil, it’s a must watch! Benegal’s ‘Nishant’ captures the tyrannical power-play of the high-handed Zamindars and brings you the struggle of a rape victim for justice when the perpetrators of her torment happen to hail from the Zamindar’s clan. The ‘Benegal @ Work’ festival is something every film aficionado should mark out on their calendars and not miss for the world!

Zee Classic has the largest library of Hindi movies with over 300 exclusive titles from 1940 to 1970. These films have been digitally remastered so that viewers have the best possible experience of these evergreen films. Classics like Awara, Mother India, Shree 420 and the best works of legends like Raj Kapoor, Kishore Kumar, SD Burman, Guru Dutt, amongst many others, are just a few in Zee Classic’s vast library.

Do not insist on RTI applicants to provide address: Centre

12012014
Do not insist on RTI applicants to provide address: Centre
Government departments should not insist on seeking address of an RTI applicant if a post box number is being provided to them for communication, the Centre has said.
The Ministry of Personnel has written to all central government ministries or departments, who act as public authorities mandated with providing information on RTI applications made to them, citing a judgement by Calcutta High Court in this regard.
“When the legislature thought it fit, the applicant need not disclose any personal detail, the authority should not insist upon his detailed whereabouts particularly when post box number is provided for establishing contact between him and the authority.
“In case the authority would find any difficulty with the post box number, they may insist upon personal details. However, in such case, it would be the solemn duty of the authority to hide such information and particularly from their website so that people at large would not know of the details,” the High Court judgement said.
The order had come following a writ petition by Avishek Goenka who sought court’s direction that authority should not insist upon the detailed address of the applicant as and when any application is made under the Right to Information Act.
The interested parties could cause a threat to the activist and there have been past incidents of unnatural deaths of activists in the field, presumably by persons having vested interest to conceal the information that is asked for by the activist, the petitioner had said.
Disposing of the petition on 20th November, last year, the court had directed Secretary, Ministry of Personnel, to circulate a copy of its order to all concerned so that the authority can take appropriate measures to hide information with regard to personal details of the activists to avoid any harassment by the persons having vested interest.
The Personnel Ministry, nodal department for implementation of the RTI Act, had on Wednesday sent a copy of the court’s order to all ministries and chief secretaries of state governments for appropriate action.
“It is a step in the right direction towards protecting the lives of whistleblowers,” said Commodore Lokesh K Batra (Retd), who had in October 2013 brought to the notice of the Ministry that public information officers were sharing personal data of RTI applicants with private bodies, thus endangering the lives of information seekers.

Rahul spoke about Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi saying that the BJP wants to form a “one-man centric” government at the Centre which is not good for the country.
“The government should not function according to the whims and fancy of a single person. The future of over 120 crore people can be safeguarded with inclusive politics only.”

The Gandhi scion told the newspaper that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is different from his party with different ideology and different style of working.

Vinod Binny of AAP to hold a press conference

15012014
Vinod Binny of AAP to hold a press conference tomorrow against AAP government in Delhi.
MLA Vinod Kumar Binnyhas accused the party of deviating from its agenda on the basis of which it was voted to power. Binny MLA of AAP defeated the Congress  health minister in the previous  government to win from the Laxmi Nagar constituency, said he would sit on a hunger strike if his party failed to respond to his charges.
“There is a lot of difference in what we promised and what is happening. We are going to hold a press conference tomorrow. We’re not going to discuss party affairs behind closed doors,” Binny said.
The video of mine on how\why MNC-owners pay paid-media to promote AK to cut NaMo votes cross 120,000 views !! And there are 5-6 copies of this videos with collected count of over 200,000 !! (google on “congress grand plan” to see some 5-6 copies of this videos)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5vH5VZX6XI
The original video is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ygp-EM5cOpQ has 17000 views…
There are lot better videos such as “how wealth tax of 1% can reduce flat prices in metro cities to less than 1/3rd of what it is now” and many more.  see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiQ5hCGswPQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuC3_PakcnA ). Sadly , the videos such good videos on proposed good law-drafts dont cross 2000 views. And expose type videos cross 200,000 !!
It is good to see videos crossing such marks. But I wish the videos on proposed solution would get more views)

Arvind exposed as Vinod Kumar Binny to go on a hunger strike

16012014
Arvind Kejriwal separated from his mentor Anna in month of July 2012 after the Arvind made up his mind to set up political entity on the Annas public view that we will give political alternative, Annas followers Kiran, Santosh dismissed this plea with heated arguements but Arvind did find space of another political outfit in national capital where people were fed up with collaborative politics. He found people of Delhi too annoyed on surge in water electric bill and privatization of water. Anna continued his task to get lokpal bill passed but arvind find news issues on which fortified his party in the national capital and his lusterless candidates won as the traditional parties workers supported the hybrid outfit. NGO employees of Arvind found new platform helped to deploy poor quality volunteers at low cost and NGo’s employees were elevated and some of them are the minister and hold high offices in Arvind outfit AAP as per the insider report.
AAP was formed on 26 Nov 2012 with 300 founder members, for reasons of scrutiny, founder members are limited to approximately 275 but surprisingly those close to Arvind find themselves in coterie rest ignored and still are in state of despair.More than 15 months have elapsed and no General meeting has been called of the founder members or the volunteers an essential tenet of any organistaion registered thus mutilating all norms of democracy in the functioning of party for which the Arvind projects himself as the only honest man in political arena as told to us by his members who did not want to identify.Further his colleagues add his word is final and is hard to be accessible for reasons best known to Arvind.
Today press conference by Aam Aadmi Party’s rebel Member of the Legislative Assembly Vinod Kumar Binny who alleged that the government is deviating from its principles, which helped the AAP win 28 seats in last month’s assembly election hold true to its core.
AAP, its MLA Vinod Kumar Binny  accused the party of backtracking on a range of promises, including in the water and power sector, and slammed the leadership for "deviating" from its core principles.Laxmi Nagar MLA said though the party during the election campaign had promised to provide 700 litres of free water to each household, the government "very cleverly" announced that those exceeding the limit will have to pay for the full amount. The MLA, a former Congressman, said forming the government by taking support of Congress was a "compromise of the party's principles".
"We had announced publicly that we wouldn't give or take support of any political party. Then what prompted the party to change the decision. Discussions were held behind closed doorson the issue," he said.
Binny had publicly displayed his unhappiness after he was left out of the Cabinet in December.
He announced that he will go on a hunger strike if the party fails to fulfil its promises by 27th January.
"I am an honest soldier of this party. I will not leave the party," he said.
On the electricity front, Binny said that the government "defrauded" the people of Delhi as the party had promised to halve the bills after coming to power.The government said subsidy will be given to those whose monthly consumption does not exceed 400 units. This is totally unacceptable;
Binny addressing press conference in New Delhi said, “We had announced publicly that we wouldn’t give or take support of any political party. Then, what prompted the party to change its decision?” Binny asked.
“The AAP was not formed to grab attention. That is why I’m saying there is a big mismatch between what the party had promised and what the government is doing,” he added.
Terming the party as an opportunist outfit, the legislator from Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar constituency alleged, “They are using the policy of use and throw. First, they used Anna Hazare, Kiran Bedi and now many in the party are being exploited.”
“It is unfair on all the party workers who have given their all to build the party — they have been given a raw deal,” he added.
“Look at the candidates contesting for the Lok Sabha seats in Delhi; all of it was pre-decided. It was decided where Gopal Rai would contest from or from where Kumar Vishwas or Ashish Talwar will contest.”
“So why have all this drama that it the list of candidates will be finalised only after signatures of party members. Is this not a fraud, is this not cheating the public?” Binny asked.
“Today Kumar Vishwas is campaigning in Amethi. Now, what is he doing there when his name has not even been announced as a candidate?”
Terming Kejriwal a dictator, the 39-year-old MLA alleged that the chief minister gets angry with people who don’t agree with him. “He gets angry if someone expresses their disagreement over an issue. If anyone speaks against him, he starts shouting.”
Kejriwal had said Binny’s dissent was because he was not made a minister.
“Arvind bhai says I am a liar and I had demanded a party ticket. Let me tell you that my name was there on that list, which went to the lieutenant governor. But I declined to take up a post in the government.”
Binny also attacked senior journalist Ashutosh, who recently joined the AAP.
“The other day Ashutosh said there is no place for opportunist people in the party. He joined the party after we came to power. But I joined the AAP when it was being formed. Whom would you bill as an opportunist?” he asked the media.
Attacking the AAP government’s policy of providing 700 litres of free water, Binny said, “The government talks of subsidy for those whose monthly consumption does not exceed 400 units. Why give subsidies only for a few? Give 700 litres of water on an unconditional basis.”
The MLA said he would stage a dharna if the promises made to the people during the AAP’s election campaign were not fulfilled by January 27.
Binny also criticised the government for delaying the Jan Lokpal Bill. “The AAP had promised to bring the Jan Lokpal Bill within 14 days of coming to power. The party came to power on December 28. Today, it has been 19 days,” he added.
Binny slammed Kejriwal for a delayed response to the gang-rape of a Danish woman in the capital. Two people have been arrested in connection with the case.
“Arvind bhai should have spoken to the police commissioner and ordered immediate action.”
“It is your government and you are running away from the people. Women’s security is a big issue and one shouldn’t delay in taking action,” Binny said.
“Water and power issues can wait,” the MLA felt, “but we can’t compromise on women security.”

Cancel Environmental Clearance for POSCO Project

16012014
New Delhi, January 15: A protest was organised by 14 groups under the banner of Delhi Solidarity Group at Paryavaran Bhavan today to protest the Environmental Clearance given to POSCO project in Odisha in violation of the Honorable National Green Tribunal’s decision and the Meena Gupta Committee findings. The groups demanded cancellation of the clearance until recommendations of the NGT and Meena Gupta Committee are fulfilled as well as a complete halt on forceful land acquisition and destruction of forest and beetel vines. The action was organised in solidarity with POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS) as part of observing January 15th as National Protest Day against POSCO.
In the ongoing case the NGT had decided to stay the earlier clearance given to the project even while the question of forest clearance has not been settled. Despite this, the MoEF has cleared the project just before the arrival of the South Korean President, Ms. Park Geun Hye. On 30th March, 2012, in the matter of Prafulla Samantra v/s Union of India, the National Green Tribunal suspended the clearance given to the project by the ministry untill a full review by a committee consisted of judicial and expert members of the committee. The tribunal in its order even reduced the total capacity of the project from 12 MTP to 4 MTP. But the ministry has again given clearance to the project without following these conditions and more specifically without an MoU of the Project proponent i.e. POSCO with the state of Odisha. To note, the MoU had lapsed in June, 2010.
The Meena Gupta Committee in 2010 too reported the Environmental Clearance and the Forest Clearance as illegal and it recommended for additional study and due compliance of all the conditions. But, the Environment Ministry which is incharge of ensuring environment policy for the country overlooked all the conditions, violations by the project proponent, state and more importantly the ongoing struggle against the project by the people for their right to life and livelihood for last seven years now.
Delinking of Port Project is not enough, the clearance should ensure of no mining which is already proposed as the project will include iron ore mining for over 30 years (total 600 million tones) at captive mines located in Keonjhar and Sundergarh district of Odisha, destroying the beautiful Khandadhar mountain and disturbing the tribal culture of the area.
When none of these conditions were looked into and recommendations ignored then how can the Ministry go ahead and clear the controversial POSCO Project at the cost of life and livelihood of such a large population?
Delhi Solidarity Groups demanded:
1.      The Environmental and Forest Clearance should be canceled until the recommendations of the NGT and Meena Gupta Committee are fulfilled
2.      Forceful land acquisition and destruction of forest and beetel vines should be stopped
3.      Construction of boundary walls for the project should be stopped immediately, since there is no MoU and any construction is completely illegal

Bapu Geetika – Songs for the Mahatma 14 Languagess I 106 Poets I 108 Songs

16012014

De Valera and his green shirts –with their back to the wall
Hitler with his brown shirts- riding for a fall
Mussolini with his black shirt – lording over it all
Three cheers for Mahatma Gandhi with no shirt at all

New Delhi: While for many Mahatma Gandhi may be limited to the picture on currency notes and a holiday on his birthday but message from his life still hold a lot to inspire people not just in India but world. It is more so for youth in India who are all set to drive India in this century and are fighting for a new India.

BapuGeetika, a collection of 108 songs penned by 106 poets in 14 Indian languages, is a first of a kind, a unique initiative in India to spread and take forward Mahatma’s message in India and worldwide. 108 songs are based on exquisite well honed poetry about Mahatma by those whose lives were greatly influenced by Mahatma Gandhi at some point in their life. The poets included are Rabindranath Tagore, Maithili Sharan Gupt, Subhadrakumari Chauhan, Prabhakar Machwey,Sri Sri, Ray prolu Subba Rao, Umashankar Joshi, Subrahmanya Bharti, Masti Venkatesh Iyer, G Shankar Kurup to name few.

The songs composed in this project were helmed by venerable Uma Shankar Chandola and some of India’s finest composers, singers, voices and instrumentalists came together for the project. The song’s cut across all linguistic, regional and cultural barriers in the finest Indian musical traditions.

It has been a mammoth effort in all ways – 14 languages, over 100 poets, 7 composers, 60 singers and 65 live musicians. Artist of all ages are involved in the project with youngest at 14 years of age and oldest being at 75 years of age. Recordings for the 108 songs lasted for over two years as it was mostly done on weekends.

This project brings out the   unknown work of these stalwart Indian poets.

BapuGeetika is, however, brainchild of one individual – Kalpana Palkhiwala – who spent more than 20 years of her life gathering people and resources to fulfill the dream – she did all this while working with government of India in different capacities.

“Gandhiji may not be physically with us anymore but his messages still ring loud in our mind clearly. BapuGeetika is not just a celebration of Gandhiji’s life but is also an endeavor to spread his message. His life and message is quite relevant for India and the youth today and that is why we have come out with this project,” Kalpana Palkhiwala, age 62, said at the release of the BapuGeetika.

Kalpana Palkhiwala has launched the project with Gunjan Communication, which is a Delhi based initiative that aims at realizing projects that shun discrimination and forge connections that transcend boundaries.

“When we are forgetting the message of Gandhiji, I thought this should be brought forward particularly through children and youth. My main target audience is children and youth and the general masses. Because if one student out of 100, believes in this and turns into a chhota (small) Gandhi and brings some impact on society for betterment, then my goal would be achieved,” said Kalpana Palkhiwala while explaining her goal.

“Thus each student will have strength and power to touch several other lives- it would have a force multiplier impact on millions of lives at the level of individuals, society and nation at large. It is our conscious effort to create leaders. I have full faith in youth that it would take the message,” said Kalpana Palkhiwala.

Kalpana said she took inspiration from a holocaust survivor and human rights activist Elie Wiesel, a Nobel laureate, who had once famously said “With all that I have gone through in life, I still have faith in humanity. I have faith in language, although language was perverted by the enemy. I have faith in God, although I quarrel with Him a lot of time. When you enter this world and you say that the world is not good today, good! Correct it.” The same way Kalpana explained she has faith in today’s youth who, aspires change.

Soon Kalpana Palkhiwala and Gunjan communication are planning to set up BapuGeetika foundation. They are planning to take BapuGeetika to schools, colleges, universities and other institutions where they can spread the message of Bapu and change the lives. For these activities, they are inviting likeminded people to join this movement.

Modi writes to PM to protest Shinde’s statement

17012014
Modi writes to PM to protest Shinde
Gujarat CM and BJP’s PM candidate Narendra Modi, calling Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde’s remarks on minority youths in jails on terror charges and marked it a “new low” for the country, has written to Prime Minister.
He also asked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to advise his cabinet colleague not to focus his attention on minorities alone as “principles at stake” could not be sacrificed “at the altar of political expediency”.
In a letter to Singh, the BJP’s prime ministerial contender said Shinde’s statement could send a wrong message about the country’s criminal justice system and have a demoralising effect on the law enforcement machinery.
“The Home Minister’s concern is a brazen and callous attempt to woo the minority community and even the minority community will raise questions on the timing of such statements,” Modi said.
“The suggestion (from Shinde) is unprecedented and marks a new low for the country…. the principles at stake are far too valuable to be sacrificed at the altar of political expediency,” he said. The Gujarat Chief Minister said, “a crime is a crime irrespective of the birth marks of the criminal and his religious beliefs could not determine the guilt or innocence.”
Shinde had last week made a statement that he would write to all state governments to set up review or screening committees to assess the role of minority youths languishing in jails on terror charges without trial.
Modi also wrote that the suggestion was against the constitutional principle of right to equality before law

A day after the gangrape of a Danish woman in New Delhi, Delhi government has accused the Delhi Police of being highly compromised and failing to ensure the safety of people of the national capital.
“Delhi police are highly compromised. If accountability of Delhi Police is not fixed, then crime and rape incidents will not go down,” Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal told reporters in New Delhi on Thursday and warned the Delhi Police Commissioner that his government and people of Delhi will not remain mute spectators in case police functioning does not improve.
“After a rape takes place, then we demand immediate arrest of the culprits. But that is not sufficient. Why would rapes happen in the first place”? Kejriwal said.
Citing two specific instances of non-cooperation by the police in which two Delhi government ministers sought action, the Chief Minister said his government sought an immediate suspension of two SHOs and two ACPs allegedly involved.
“We demand as well as give ultimatum to Delhi Police to suspend the erring SHOs of Sagarpur and Malviya Nagar police station. Sagarpur police did not take action against the family who burnt their daughter-in-law even after Women and Child Development Minister Rakhi Birla while Malviya Nagar police plainly refused to take action in the alleged sex and drug trafficking racket being run from Khirki village despite the Law Minister’s tip-off,” Kejriwal told a press conference.
He also demanded the suspension of the two ACPs who had come to the spot and allegedly did not act.
Reacting to Delhi Police’s statements about the minsiters interfering in their work, Kejriwal said “how can Delhi Police say that state ministers are interfering in their work? Police are just refusing to act.”
Kejriwal’s reaction was in response to letters written to him by Bharti and Rakhi Birla, both of whom faced severe resistance from the police on Wednesday night, when they brought two separate incidents to the notice of concerned police officials at two different places.
Kejriwal said he will meet the Lt Governor and raise the issue with him.
“I am meeting Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung tomorrow morning, where Delhi Police commissioner is also coming. I am going to tell him in strong words that citizens of Delhi will not be a mute spectator,” said Kejriwal.
To a query on accusation against Bharti and Birla of interfering in the police work, Kejriwal said they (ministers) were not doing investigation themselves but seeking police action in the cases.
“What is the job of Delhi Police? Is it not the job of Delhi Police to catch drug racketeers, sex racketeers, rapists or those who burn their daughter-in-law?
“The ministers are only telling police to take action but Delhi Police are calling it interference in its work. If this is interference, then entire Delhi will interfere in their work,” Kejriwal said, adding drug and sex rackets lead to rape incidents.
Defending his ministers, Kejriwal said they do not have any personal enmity with the police personnel involved in those two specific cases.
Bharti alleged Malviya Nagar police did not cooperate in conducting a surprise raid on Nigerian nationals involved in drug and sex racket at Khirki village.
Birla accused Sagarpur police of shielding the family who had allegedly burnt their daughter-in-law over dowry.

SC reserves order on scrapping of coal block allocations

SC reserves order on scrapping of coal block allocations
The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its verdict on scrapping of around 200 coal blocks allocation after holding a marathon arguments spanning over 16 months during which the Centre’s role in awarding the natural resourses to private companies came under sharp criticism.
A three-judge bench headed by Justice R M Lodha, which had agreed to look into the alleged irregularities in coal block allocation on September 14, 2012, wrapped up the proceedings which witnessed the Centre itself putting in motion the process of deallocating some coal blocks.
The bench heard the arguments of all concerned parties involved in the allocation, including the seven mining states and the association of mining companies.
Private companies contended any order of the apex court should have prospective effect and all the allocations should not be scrapped in one go and it should be decided on a case- to-case basis.
“It is submitted that as far as the system of allocation is concerned, any challenge even if succcessful, could have prospective effect where people have acted in a bona fide manner, assuming the machinery was in accordance with law.
“If there are irregularitiies in the grant, it is submitted that it would depend on the facts of an individual case as to the degree of the irregularities and whether it has resulted in a miscarriage of justice, in which case there could be a wholesale invalidation,” senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for associations of Sponge Iron Manufacturers Association, said.
The court was hearing petitions filed by members of civil societies including former CEC N Gopalaswami, ex-Navy chief L Ramdas and former Cabinet Secretary T S R Subramanian and lawyer M L Sharma seeking cancellation of coal block allocations.

India, S Korea ink 9 pacts; Posco plant work to start soonUpdated on : 17-01-2014 07:01 AM
In a bid to give new momentum to bilateral ties, India and South Korea have decided to intensify cooperation in a range of key sectors including trade, investment and defence even as PM Manmohan Singh announced that the work on the long-delayed Posco steel plant will start in coming weeks.
Nine pacts in wide-ranging fields including cyber space cooperation were inked after the talks between Singh and South Korean President Park Geun-hye during which both leaders discussed ways to promote bilateral relations and exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues.
After the talks, Singh said negotiations for revision of the existing Double Taxation Avoidance Convention have concluded.
“We have just concluded wide-ranging discussion on matters of bilateral interest and regional and global importance. This has enabled us to impart further substance, greater content and new momentum to the Strategic Partnership between our two countries,” Singh said at a joint media event with Park on Thursday.
He said both the leaders have decided to establish an annual interaction between the “national security structures” of the two countries besides agreeing to launch a Cyber Affairs Dialogue.
“I am happy that the large-scale POSCO steel project in Odisha is set to be operational in the coming weeks, following the revalidation of its environmental clearance. Grant of mining concession for the project is also at an advanced stage of processing. I conveyed to President Park our hope that this project will confirm that economic growth and environmental protection can go hand in hand,” Singh said.
During the talks, both the sides recognised the possibility of defence trade and joint production of military equipment by further promoting collaboration between our defence research organisations.
The Prime Minister hoped that the agreement on protection of classified military information signed will also boost defence engagement between the two countries.
“In the area of Science and Technology, our collaboration has been highly rewarding, with many practical projects being financed through the 10 million US dollar Joint Fund that we established in 2010,” the Prime Minister said.
On the MoU on Joint Applied Research, which was inked after the Summit-level talks, Singh said it will enable the scientists of the two countries to work together and develop technologies for our common benefit.
“We are also stepping up collaboration in the peaceful uses of space science and technology,” he said.
The Prime Minister said India has also decided to extend ‘tourist visa on arrival facility’ to South Korean people to increase people-to-people contacts and was also exploring the possibility of better civil aviation links.
Both the leaders also deliberated on regional issues, particularly developments in the Korean peninsula.
“The visit of President Park has imparted fresh momentum to our partnership. I am confident that our talks today have laid out a road map for the expansion and enhancement of our Strategic Partnership in the coming years,” he said.
Expressing satisfaction over outcome of the talks, Park said she has requested Singh to allow South Korean banks to operate in India.
Park also said there has been scope for enhancing cooperation in defence sector.
In an apparent reference to North Korea, she said the Korean peninsula has been facing the threat of nuclear weapons and efforts must be made to ensure peace and stability in the region.

India pitches for visa liberalisation in SAARC region

India pitches for visa liberalisation in SAARC regionUpdated on : 16-01-2014 10:35 PM
India on Thursday pitched for further liberalisation of visa regime within the SAARC region to facilitate movement of businessmen, in a bid to increase trade and investment.
“I will support enhancement of more SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) visas so that more business people can travel. We welcome SAARC countries to invest in India,” Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said at the SAARC Business Leaders Conclave in New Delhi on Thursday.
Sharma said there is a need to work together for creating a more trusting environment which enables easier movement of professionals across borders.
He also said that there is a need to open bank branches in each other countries to help traders.
“We assure you that we will be encouraging Indian banks to open branches in each SAARC nation. Indian banks have presence in few of them,” he said.
Trade and economic ministers of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka were present during the function.
Sharma also emphasised to strengthen infrastructure bottlenecks such as roads, ports and airports to reduce transactions cost and enhance trade within the region.
All the ministers shared this view and endorsed Sharma concerns over modernisation of infrastructure.
“Connectivity is a problem in this region. We need to improve it to enhance trade,” Nepalese Commerce Minister Shanker Prasad Koirala said.
“Unless and until we create better infrastructure, we will not be able to bring down the transactions cost and we will not be competitive in the global market,” Sharma said.
Further, all the ministers asserted their desire to strongly build the SAARC region as huge potential exists for trade and investments.
“SAARC is walking, but it needs to run, but now it is the time to gallop. Nepal and Bhutan has huge potential to generate power but we are not able to do that. If we come together and increase cooperation, we can do much better,” Bhutanese Economic Affairs Minister Norbu Wangchuk said.
Bangladesh Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said: “We should sit together and discuss ways to increase trade”.
Afghanistan’s Deputy Minister of Commerce Mozammel Shinwari said his country has the potential to become a major transit point for South Asian region.
“There is a need to create a level playing field. I believe much more trade can take place…there is a scope for building a regional supply chain in the SAARC region, provided there is an adequate infrastructure,” Pakistan’s Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan said.
He said that tremendous opportunity is present in this region to increase trade.
The SAARC ministers collectively expressed the view to deal with serious issues like poverty, unemployment and malnutrition.
“We have issues like poverty and unemployment. We need to work together on these matters,” Economic Development Minister of Maldives Mohamed Saeed said.
Echoing similar views, Sharma said: “About 40 per cent of the world poor are in this region. We have to work together to eradicate hunger, poverty and malnutrition”.
Further, all the ministers said enhance cooperation is required in areas like skill development, education and tourism.

Sonia Gandhi addresses AICC meet

Sonia Gandhi addresses AICC meet
Sonia Gandhi has appealed to all parties to rise above political considerations to help pass anti-graft bills pending in Parliament.
While addressing AICC meeting in New Delhi on Friday, Sonia Gandhi said that main opposition dividing society, spreading violence.
Congress is ready and prepared for battle ahead, says Sonia.
Lets now take a look at the challenges that Congress is currently facing and is looking forward to find solutions of during the AICC meeting on Friday.
The list of Challenges confronting Rahul Gandhi seems to be enormous and endless. Apart from the huge anti incumbency burden that he will have to carry , other factors seem to have added to the  already overflowing basket.
After the disastrous performance in assembly elections this winter, Price rise remains a matter of worry for the party.
Startled by the results and seeing the cart sliding away rather fast, Rahul specifically asked the congress chief ministers to reign in the prices of essential commodities.
Matters concerning the Aam Aadmi also present their share of headache for Rahul Gandhi.
The need to enhance the quota of subsidized LPG cylinders from 9 to 12 is not lost on the party. Party mp’s from urban areas are vehemently demanding the move.
The issue of corruption is also up on the radar. With the success of AAP in delhi elections, its clear that the issue merits immediate attention.
Although many congress leaders say that Rahul gandhi’s personal intervention accelerated the passage of Lokpal bill, rahuil himself wants few more steps to be taken to complete the task.
Many believe the delay in firming up support to the lokpal bill may have cost the party dear.
The perception took roots that congress and upa is not  serious in tackling corruption. Rahul Gandhi will have the onerous task to do the course correction.  The assembly elections have once again brought the factional fights in the state units to the fore.
With appointment of young leaders like sachin pilot and arun yadav as PCC chiefs in their respective states, Rahul may have started cracking the whip, but the road to reforms has just started.
While many congress leaders are vociferously clamoring for the generation shift, it is the generation gap in the party which is also source of a disconnect between the young and the old guard.
The coordination between the party and the government is also quite evident when pary leaders repeatedly say that the party has failed to propagate the works of the government to the masses.
Then the issue of taking Narendra Modi head on also remains. Political analyst believe that sooner than later rahul will have to take the bull by the horns.
It just cant be delayed. Party has been dithering to suggest a Rahul versus Modi contest , but under the circumstances many leaders believe it is inevitable.
Then there is a challenge in the family backyard. AAP candidate kumar vishwas breathing down the neck with his campaigning, Rahul will have to give some more time and attention to his own turf of amethi.

Bids for Odisha & Cheyyur UMMP to be Opened on 26th February
An historical 21 GW of capacity addition took place during the financial year 2012-13 and more than 8700 MW of capacity addition has been achieved by December, 2013 for the financial year 2013-14.  The total installed capacity in the country at present stands at 236 GW.  This was stated by Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Minister of State (I/C) of Power while addressing the media in New Delhi today.  The Minister disclosed that total installed capacity of 400 GW will be required by 2022 to meet the power demand, which is a huge challenge for the country.
Mr. Scindia opined that availability, adequacy, and affordability have to be the crux of power sector strategy in India. For this, the emphasis of power sector development should be on capacity addition, transmission and last mile connectivity.
In a major achievement, the southern grid connectivity was achieved three months ahead of schedule with the commissioning of 765 Kv Raichur-Sholapur Transmission line on 31st December, 2013.  With this the power system has stepped into a new era i.e., One Nation, One Grid, One Frequency, the minister added. He said that the country will have the largest transmission capacity in the world in the next four to five years.
Mr. Scindia said that the RGGVY scheme has been extended to the 12th Plan and for the balance of the 13th Plan, covering habitations with the population of 100 and above.  More than Rs. 35000 cr have been approved for the completion of the scheme in the 13th Plan.
Speaking about the supply of gas to the coal sector, the Minister said that after the latest decision of the Govt. to cap the supply of domestic gas to the fertilizer sector, nearly 9 MMSCMD of additional gas will be available to the power sector over the next three years. The Minister admitted that the shortage of gas supply has become a matter of concern since nearly 20 GW of capacity is tied up in gas based power projects.
With respect to the supply of coal to the power sector, the Minister said that a remarkable achievement has been signing of 157 FSAs with total capacity of 72 GW out of a total of stipulated 78 GW in a record time of 2 and half months. Mr. Scindia disclosed that 9 applications have been received for Odisha UMPP and 8 for Cheyyur (Tamil Nadu), the bids for which will be opened on 26th February, 2014.
The Minister elaborated that several level of redundancies have been put in place and these mechanisms are now institutionalized to ensure grid security.  Frequency band has been tightened which is now closer to international norms and congestion charges have been imposed to ensure that everybody follows the guidelines. Similarly, autonomy to POSOCO is also under process.
The Ladakh region of J&K will be connected with the National Grid soon since the Cabinet has approved the transmission project between Srinagar and Leh along with the associated transmission lines as well as sub stations. This will enable remote areas of Leh and Kargil to benefit from the much needed power supply during winter as well as allow evacuation of excess power in summer from NHPC Power Plants of Nimmo Bazgo, and Chutak recently commissioned in the Leh/Kargil area.  The Minister added that his Ministry has been working closely with the Ministry of Environment and Forests for speedy clearances. More than 4800 MW of Hydro Capacity received wildlife/environment/forest clearances recently as a result of these efforts. Similarly, E-GoM has been set up to expedite Hydro Projects in Arunachal Pradesh.
Speaking on the issue of subsidy on power, the Minister said that if the states wish to give subsidy on electricity, then they must re-imburse the subsidy amount to the concerned DISCOM immediately to ensure revenue neutrality of the DISCOM.
The Financial Restructuring of DISCOMs is doing well in the four states of Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, UP & Haryana with an FRP amount of Rs 95,247 cr finalized and bonds worth Rs 46,707 cr already issued, the Minister added.

The Worldwatch Institute discusses the characteristics of governance that can be most effective in facing the converging environmental crises of the future
Washington, D.C.—When a crisis develops, what sort of governance is best? Crises have traditionally resulted from situations of social turmoil, such as military invasion, revolution, or corruption, but expectations are that modern-day emergencies are more likely to arise from disturbances due to climate change and other environmental disruptions. Rising sea levels and severe weather patterns are predicted to increase the number of environmental refugees to the tens, even hundreds of millions, with millions more suffering severe disturbances to their livelihoods. In the Worldwatch Institute’s (www.worldwatch.org) State of the World 2013: Is Sustainability Still Possible?, contributing authors deliberate over what qualities of governance will be the most effective as we endure the planet’s long future struggle with environmental crises.
It is possible for us to reach a state of sustainable living, but this will happen only once we are able to overcome political—-more than technical—-problems. Current governments, encumbered by bureaucracy, swayed by special-interest groups, and forced to respond to a variety of competing communities, have so far proven incapable of dealing with the threat of climate change. If we are ultimately unable to push our leaders into effectively rewriting policy, we must prepare ourselves for what kinds of catastrophes might arise and how we can best deal with them politically.
Brian Martin, professor of social sciences at the University of Wollongong, Australia, and contributing author of State of the World 2013,provides four essential features of effective governance during times of crisis.
  • Widespread participation: “Significant participation is essential for rapidly responding to a crisis,” says Martin. “Genuine participation is greatest when power is shared. The more people take part in creating a solution, the more likely they are to stay committed.”
  • Development of resources: When troubles arise, we need to be prepared with adequate technological and material resources. These include food, transport, and especially methods of communication.
  • Tolerance and inclusion: Having certain sectors of the population opposed to action can delay and prevent important changes that need to be made. With everyone participating, we ensure that solutions are acceptable to all citizens and that every group is contributing to solving challenges.
  • Skill development: Through education and the sharing of ideas, we can be prepared to respond to threats in effective and intelligent ways. Martin explains that strategic insight is most likely to flourish in a form of governance that gives considerable autonomy to smaller units, while enabling communication between them so that insights can be shared, tested, and applied.
All of these characteristics can be achieved with a government that is both local and flexible. These qualities are best demonstrated by the efforts of smaller grassroots groups, which have been successful in encouraging citizen participation and influencing local government actions. Groups that involve members of the community in which change is being made are so far creating more awareness about climate change than large, international organizations.
“International governance is particularly unsuited for dealing with crisis,” says Martin. “There is little citizen participation and little capacity for skill development. The result is a form of symbolic politics that gives only the illusion of authority.”
David Orr, the Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics at Oberlin College, offers a long-term perspective on how we can transform our governments to handle any imminent environmental catastrophes. One concern he addresses is the potential for the emergence of authoritarian governments to provide ultimate enforcement of societal change. According to Orr, the most effective alternative to this kind of state totalitarianism is to strengthen democracy.
The best way to strengthen democracy is to create active citizen participation in government, rebuilding democracy from the bottom up. A transition to local, self-governing communities will raise the legitimacy of policy choices and improve public knowledge.
“In our time, strong democracy may be our best hope for governance in the long emergency but it will not develop without significant changes,” said Orr. “One necessary change is to confront economic oligarchy. Today the majority of concentrated wealth is tied, directly or indirectly, to fossil fuels. A second change must be to the triviality, narrowness, and often factual inaccuracy of our political conversations. It is time to talk about important things.” While neither are easy tasks, neither will be living through four degrees of climate change.
Worldwatch’sState of the World 2013, released in April 2013, addresses how “sustainability” should be measured, how we can attain it, and how we can prepare if we fall short. For more information, visit www.sustainabilitypossible.org. Worldwatch’s upcoming book State of the World 2014: Governing for Sustainability, which highlights both obstacles and opportunities and shows how to effect change within and beyond the halls of government, will be available in April 2014. Kelai, Hailu thrown down gauntlet among elite athletes

17012014
Kenya’s John Kelai believes that he has the experience to once again triumph in the US$ 360,000 prize-money Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon on Sunday, January 19. “I appreciate the opportunity I have got to once again participate in this marathon. I have prepared well for this event. The competition is very strong and I have to go the extra mile to get the result,” he stressed during an interaction with media persons at the SCMM Media Centre on Thursday.
Kelai, a former two-time champion (2008 and 2009) and having run four years in Mumbai, is the most experienced runner in the ‘Elite’ field and he is confident of doing well. “I’ve participated four times in Mumbai and am looking forward to this race. Of all the competitors, I have the best experience and I know how to deal with the heat and I am well prepared. The runners list is long and it will definitely be a good race,” pointed out Kelai, who has a personal best of 2:09.30 set at the 2007 Toronto Marathon.
The Kenyan, who won gold in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, feels that it would give him the confidence to win this event.
However, he will have to contend with Ethiopian Hailu Mekonnen and South Africa’s Gladwin Mzazi. The Ethiopian’s fastest time is 2:07.35 and he could upset the Kenyan, while Mzazi, who is making his debut in the Mumbai Marathon, has a 7th place finish in 2013 Delhi Half Marathon and is also capable of springing a surprise. Mekonnen said “I have trained properly and expect a good result. The conditions here in Mumbai are hot as compared to Addis Ababa. The wind in Addis is cool, but I have worked hard and hope to adjust to the conditions to do well,” he stated.
The young South African admitted that he lacked experience but is prepared to have a shot at winning. “I don’t have much experience running the full marathon, but I will try my best to win the race,” he said.
The women’s field will be equally challenging with Ethiopia’s Dinknesh Mekash, whose personal best is 2:25.09 when she finished fourth at last year’s Paris Marathon. “I am glad to be here in Mumbai and will try to lower the course record (2:24.33). I will be trying my best, but God knows who will win,” she said. Ukraine’s Yulia Ruban and Eunice Kales from Kenya are the ones who would pose a strong challenge to Mekash. The 30-year-old Ruban, who has a personal best of 2:27.00, stated that she has done some hard training back home and is fresh for this race as she has not participated in any event for the last eight months.Kales is new to Marathon and this event will her third and is hoping to doing well despite not preparing well due to illness. “I am happy to be here and among strong athletes. I was unwell, down with pneumonia two weeks ago and was under medication and could not train well. But I am focused to give my best,” she mentioned.

Tenison Joseph: Revoke suspension of Adv. Anima Muyarath

They abused her verbally and then threw chairs at her.

Anima, a young female lawyer, put upFacebook posts about gender discrimination in the Lawyers’ Bar Association of Kozhikode, Kerala. The Bar Association suspended her for it.
At the General Body meeting of the Association, she was asked to apologise. When she bravely refused, they verbally abused and threw chairs at her!

As a fellow lawyer, I am appalled at this discrimination. I strongly feel that her suspension should be revoked. That’s why I started this petition on Change.org asking, Tenison Joseph, the Secretary of Bar Association, Kozhikode, to revoke Anima’s supension.
Suspending her is an act of gender discrimination as well. It is also an attack on her Fundamental Right to Speech and Expression. I am shocked that the Bar Association indulges in such practices.
Kozhikode Bar Association has produced brilliant lawyers and it should support lawyers like Anima who stand up against injustice. It is also their responsibility to stop gender discrimination at the Bar Association.
Sign my petition. Forward it to your friends asking them to support Anima and join our campaign demanding her suspension be revoked.

TIME TO BE BOLD

17012014
THE Indo- Pakistan bilateral economic and commercial relations were put on a firm path in September 2011 when the two commerce secretaries laid out a road map with specific milestones.
This raised huge expectations.
But Pakistan has been unable to meet its commitments as laid out in the communiqué. Of all things, the nomenclature of granting the Most Favoured Nation status to India became a serious hurdle.
There is now talk of the term being changed to ‘ non discriminated country’ to satisfy those who were not ready to accept the Urdu translation of MFN. I cannot see any one guaranteeing that this version will go through because elements that can militate against importing much- needed electricity from India, can surely still agitate to prevent Pakistan normalising its trading relations with us. .
Unilateral
In the present circumstances, India should seriously consider giving unilateral access to its market for Pakistan and prune its negative list without waiting for the MFN status. India has a huge surplus in its formal bilateral trade with Pakistan.
This widens further in India’s favour when the Dubai trade is taken into account.
India’s unilateral granting of better market access will thus not materially harm India’s interests. On the other hand, it could provide a real fillip to Pakistani exports to India and thereby contribute to improving its economic performance.
But perhaps equally importantly, the unilateral gesture by India will provide major ammunition to those stakeholders in Pakistan who support better ties with India.
This unilateral measure will generate broad- based goodwill for India that will contribute to weakening the jihadis case against India. Clearly, India’s security interests, of which political stability within Pakistan and weakening of the jihadi support base are two principle components, will be directly served by this measure.
The case of the Turkmenistan- Afghanistan- Pakistan- India ( TAPI) gas pipeline is an instructive one for understanding the convergence between India’s national security interests and improving economic ties with Pakistan. TAPI was initially proposed by the ADB in 2000- 01.
The other three countries moved with alacrity and set up a formal mechanism to push forward with the ambitious project.
India on the other hand rejected it on security grounds It took more than ten years for India to finally see the merit of joining TAPI, which has just been confirmed by the new petroleum minister, Veerapa Moily. TAPI, when completed and on- stream, will generate more than $ 500 million of ‘ wheeling charges’ for Afghanistan. These will come mostly from India and will only reinforce India’s already good relations with Afghanistan.
This will directly serve India’s security and political interests. The pipeline which will also deliver much needed gas to Pakistan and India at cheaper rates will create a mutual dependence in the safeguarding of the pipeline.
Yet India’s MEA establishment, for an inordinately long time and despite the championing of the project by the line ministry, took a narrow and short term view of India’s security interests and let the project drag on for more than ten years. This mindset has to change. India has to take a more strategic view of its security interests.
Neighbours
For India, it is now important to build trust- based relationships with its neighbours, given that China is now actively trying to create a dominant presence in the South Asian economic and geographic space. Regional cooperation, mediated by external agencies like multilateral development banks would help build trust based relationship in South Asia. It will be far better placed to counter the growing Chinese influence if its neighbours developed vested interests in the larger South Asian economic space. Therefore, India will have to further intensify its asymmetric approach towards its neighbours, which began in 2007, and take the responsibility for creating more trust based relationships with them.
India can take two other major steps to build greater trust with its neighbours.
First, it should give national treatment across its territory for all freight movement from South Asian countries including Myanmar. This would dramatically reduce shipment time and costs and enable South Asian countries to exploit the huge advantage of proximity. This one step by India will go a long way in reversing the geographic fragmentation of South Asia that came about in 1947. This suggestion has been made strongly by Shyam Saran himself, who is currently the Chairman of the National Security Advisory Board. Second, it is time that India adopts a far simpler and liberal visa regime for its neighbours. The anachronistic and dysfunctional visa regime between Pakistan and India that is a major deterrent to commerce and tourism needs to be changed immediately. Visa regime with Bangladesh has already been substantially liberalised and the process should continue until the system for visa- on- arrival for all SAARC members is put in place.
Proactive
Both these suggestions will be expectedly opposed by Indian ‘ agencies’ on security grounds. This opposition is reflects inertia in modernising our security apparatus and is based on the spurious logic that India, which is one of the six countries in the world with advanced missile technology, cannot ensure its security except by adopting the most primitive measures like requiring its visitors to report to the nearest police station within 24 hours of their arrival.
In short the argument is that for India, to take an even more proactive and asymmetric approach towards its neighbours is in its long term strategic interests. Therefore, unilateral actions vis a vis its neighbours, specially Pakistan, which is the second largest economy in South Asia, as suggested above, should be seen to be in India’s strategic interests and as safeguarding its security. These are not acts of magnanimity or generosity. Moreover, India cannot aspire to be a global player if it cannot ensure stability, peace and prosperity in its neighbourhood. Improving bilateral economic and commercial relations with Pakistan must be an important component of this strategy.

780 killed in Syria rebel-jihadist battle

700 killed in Syria rebel-jihadist battle: monitor Updated on : 14-01-2014 08:17 AM
Fierce fighting between jihadists and rival rebel groups in Syria has killed at least 700 in more than a week while hundreds more are missing, a monitoring group said on Monday.
The Al-Qaeda-affiliated jihadist group, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), linked the violence to a peace conference on Syria slated to take place in Switzerland on January 22.
The allegations came as Western powers on Monday stepped up pressure on Syria’s divided opposition to take part in the conference alongside representatives of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
“From January 3 to 11, the fighting killed 697 people, among them 351 rebels, 246 members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and 100 civilians,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said there could be even “more than 1,000″ dead, but his group has been unable to document all the killings given the ferocity of the clashes.
The Britain-based monitoring group, which relies on a network of activists across Syria for its reports, also said there were “hundreds of captives from both sides whose fate is unknown”.
In a reflection of the brutality of the fighting, which has raged mainly in the northern provinces of Aleppo, Idlib and Raqa but has also hit Hama and Homs in the centre, at least 200 people were killed in one 48-hour period.
The Observatory also reported that dozens of those killed in recent days died in 16 suicide bombings staged by ISIL in Aleppo, Idlib, Homs and Raqa provinces.
“Sixteen suicide attackers have detonated themselves in the past week, most of them in car bomb attacks, some using explosive belts,” Abdel Rahman said.
A rebel fighter with Ahrar al-Sham, which is leading battles against ISIL in several areas, said “they use suicide attacks to terrorise society as a whole into submission, not just the fighters.”

Egyptians approve new constitution

98.1 pc Egyptians approve new constitutionUpdated on : 19-01-2014 12:09 AM
An overwhelming 98.1 per cent of voters approved Egypt’s new constitution in a nationwide referendum, widely seen as a vote on a likely presidential bid by army chief Gen Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
The Supreme Electoral Committee (SEC) today announced that the newly drafted national charter was approved by 98.1 per cent of voters, Al-Ahram online reported.According to SEC chief Nabil Salib, the turnout for the poll was 38.6 per cent of the 20.5 million registered voters, in comparison to 32 per cent during the 2012 referendum.
The new charter would replace the one approved under Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, who was toppled by the military in July following mass protests demanding his ouster.
Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood had called for anti-government protests and a boycott of the referendum, seeing it as part of a coup against the freely-elected leader.
The referendum is a key step in the political transition plan billed by the military-backed interim government as a path to democracy, even as it presses a fierce crackdown on the Brotherhood.
The roadmap was announced by army chief El-Sisi after Morsi’s ouster.
It stated that the constitution would be followed by parliamentary elections and presidential polls.
The new charter, drafted by a liberal-dominated committee appointed by the government, would ban political parties based on religion, give women equal rights and protect the status of minority Christians.
The constitution also gives the military special status by allowing it to select its own candidate for the job of defence minister for the next eight years and empowering military tibunals to try civilians.
Meanwhile, Arabic language newspaper Al Tahrir reported that Egyptian President Adly Mansour will announce that presidential elections will be held in March.
It quoted Essam Eddine Abdel Aziz, first deputy to the head of the State Council, as saying that Mansour will call on people to take part in the polls.
Gen El-Sisi has yet to say outright whether he plans to seek the country’s highest office, but his candidacy appears increasingly likely after the results of the referendum.
Morsi, the first democratically elected president, is being held in jail in Alexandria, facing several criminal charges relating to his time in office. He says they are politically motivated.

Rajnath Singh : Growth rate has declined because of corruption

19012014
BJP Chief said on Sunday that growth rate has declined because of corruption and Congress is scared of declaring its Prime Ministerial candidate.
Addressing the National council meet in Delhi on Saturday Rajnath Singh said his party had no objection to Article 370 which grants special status to Jammu and Kashmir if it helped the development of the state.
Reacting to BJP President Rajnath Singh’s allegations, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said that Congress Party has always adopted a strict stand against corruption, while BJP always shielded the corrupt.
After being formally assigned campaign leadership for the Lok Sabha polls, Rahul Gandhi on Saturday held consultations with state leaders on the strategy ahead.
He met All India Congress Committee delegates from each state separately.
The party is all set to begin the process of ticket distribution by holding meetings of the newly-formed screening committees to meet its plan for early declaration of candidates.

The Coordination Committee has been strengthened at a time when the party is looking to get its act together with just three months left for Lok Sabha polls.

Mistry wins DSC Prize for 2014

19012014
Reticent author Cyrus Mistry on Saturday beat off stiff competition from five other writers to become the fourth winner of the $50,000 DSC prize for South Asian literature on Saturday for his book “Chronicles of a Corpse Bearer”.
The prize, is given to the best work or translations of a work on or about the South Asian region.
Last year the award was won by Jeet Thayil for his debut debut novel “Narcopolis”. Mr. Mistry was presented with the award at a ceremony at the Jaipur Literature Festival here this evening by Gloria Steinem.
“I have tried to keep myself as detached as possible with the possibility of winning this prize, so am not so enthusiastic but happy about the win,” Mr. Mistry said after receiving the award.
Other books in the running were “Anand: Book of Destruction” (Translated by Chetana Sachidanandan) “Benyamin: Goat Days” (Translated by Joseph Koyippalli), Mohsin Hamid: “How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia”, “Nadeem Aslam: The Blind Man’s Garden” and Nayomi Munaweera: Island of a Thousand Mirrors.
Union HRD Minister was originally slated to inaugurate the prize ceremony. Noted writer, editor and literary critic Antara Dev Sen chaired the five member jury which first announced a long list of 15 names and then came up with a shortlist of six from which Mr. Mistry was chosen.
Mr. Mistry’s book is a story of marginalised community and looks at larger questions about life and death, which makes it a different read.
Set in the city of Mumbai, it revolves around the lives of a hardly heard of and rarely-seen set of people, corpse bearers or Khandhias within the Parsi community. Their job is to carry bodies of the deceased to the Towers of Silence.
The jury comprised of Arshia Sattar, Ameena Saiyid, Rosie Boycott, and Paul Yamazaki. The shortlist was announced in November last year.

Kejriwal sits on dharna against ‘police anarchy’, Shinde says CM must be patientUpdated on : 20-01-2014 05:44 PM
Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal along with his six ministerial colleagues on Monday began a dharna outside Rail Bhawan against police even as Delhi Police asked him to shift his protest to Jantar Mantar, citing prohibitory orders in the high-security area.
Police said they will not allow the demonstration to continue in the area and have requested the Chief Minister to shift to Jantar Mantar, the designated protest hot-spot of the city.
The CM has been demanding action against police officials who refused to carry out a raid on an alleged drug and prostitution racket in South Delhi last week.
Addressing the crowd gathered outside Rail Bhawan, the CM attacked the police of not working for the poeple of Delhi. Urging the people of Delhi to come in large numbers and join his protest against cops, Kejriwal said, “I have come prepared for ten days of dharna.”
Kejriwal’s appeal to people to join him in his 10-day protest comes in contradiction to his own statement he made on micro-blogging site Twitter on Sunday where he had urged the public not to come for the ‘dharna’ in view of Republic Day rehearsals.

Asking Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to maintain the dignity of the office he holds, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde today ruled out any action against Delhi Police personnel till an inquiry is over.
Talking to reporters in New Delhi on the sidelines of a function to mark the raising day of National Investigation Agency (NIA), he also made it clear that the Centre will not hand over Delhi Police to the state government.
Asked about dharna being led by Kejriwal outside Rail Bhavan, Shinde said, “He should maintain ‘garima’ (dignity) of the chair of Chief Minister and wait till the judicial probe is completed. After all he is a Chief Minister…,(which is) a high post. He should cooperate.”
Kejriwal is protesting alleged inaction against Delhi Police officials who had a tiff with Delhi’s Law Minister Somnath Bharti in Malviya Nagar in south Delhi last week.
Bharti had created a controversy when he went to a locality in Malviya Nagar, claiming a drug and prostitution ring was being run from a residence and demanded police raid the place.
However, the police refused, saying they have no warrant to do so.
Shinde said, “Ordering judicial inquiry means fixing of responsibility in an impartial manner. There is no interference in the probe. The Lt Governor has made it clear that the probe will be expedited”.
“After Nirbhaya (case), we have said there should be section 144 CrPC always in Vijay Chowk and other nearby areas. If they want to protest, they should go to Jantar Mantar.” He said, “In inquiry everything will come out (as to) who is guilty and who is not. I am in touch with Delhi Police.”
Shinde ruled out any move to hand over Delhi Police to Delhi government as demanded by Kejriwal and said even in the United States, Washington DC is under the federal authorities.
“The demand for handing over of Delhi Police to Delhi government has been an old one. Like in the US – Washington DC, the concept is that the capital is under the Centre. This (demand) is not possible.”
To a question about allegations by AAP that anarchy in Delhi was because of Congress and BJP, Shinde said, “The whole country is witnessing where is anarchy and who is creating anarchy.”

Kenyan Evans Ruto, Ethiopian’s Dinknesh Mekash sweep titles, Lalita Babbar breaks Indian Women’s course record
Mumbai, January 19: Evans Ruto led a clean Kenyan sweep in the men’s event of the US$ 360,000 prize money Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon on Sunday. The 30-year-old Ruto produced a late surge to break away from compatriots Lawerence Kimaiyo and Philemon Baaru to finish in first place in 2:09:33, just a second slower than the course record of 2:09:32 set by Uganda’s Jackson Kiprop last year. Kimaiyo claimed second place in 2:09:45 and Baaru was 13 seconds behind in third place. Ruto won US$ 41,000 for his efforts, but missed out on the course record bonus of US$ 15,000. Kimaiyo had to be content with US$ 21,000, while Baaru was richer by US$ 15,000.
“The race was good overall, but I am disappointed to miss the record by one second. I felt welcomed in Mumbai and enjoyed the race. Next time I will try for 2.07 or 2.08,” Ruto mentioned.
In the women’s event, last year’s runner-up, Ethiopian Dinknesh Mekash, went a step better by clinching first place in 2:28:08, well ahead of second placed Gladys Kipsoi of Kenya and fellow countrywomen Bizunesh Urgesa. The Kenyan, making her debut, finished with a time of 2:29:53, followed by Urgesa in 2:.30:00. Mekash went home richer by US$ 41,000, while Kipsoi received US$ 21,000 and Urgesa got US$ 15,000.

“Last year it was my first time in Mumbai and this time I was confident of winning. I trained very well in Addis Ababa and happy to win this year,” said Mekash.

Karan Singh maintained the dominance of the Army Sports Institute athletes as he won the Indian men’s full marathon in a time of 2:24:08. Rashpal Singh of Sikh Regiment, Jabalpur Centre came in second with a timing of 2:24:38, followed by last year’s winner, Binning Lynghkoi (2: 24:40) also from Army Sports Institute.

“I am happy to win this marathon. I want to thank the Army Sports Institute for the support I get. They have good facilities, like some good coaches, both foreign and Indian, physiotherapists, conditioners and the other talented athletes,” Karan Singh mentioned.

Lalita Babbar of Central Railway created history completing a hat-trick of triumphs by winning the Indian women’s full marathon in a new record time of 2:50:31, which was a full three minutes better than her time of 2:53:42 she clocked in winning last year. Following the Maharashtra runner were Vijaymala Patil (2:59:58) and Jyoti Gawate (3:02:59) of Prabhani, Maharashtra.

Babbar felt good after the race. “It’s great to set a new course record. I had trained well so I was confident and sure of completing the race in a time of around 2:50,” she stated.

However, Babbar is not certain of returning to defend her title for the fourth consecutive time next year. “I’m basically not a marathon runner. But three years back I gave it a try and came first and that is what motivated me to continue running the marathon. I have only participated in the Mumbai Marathon. But next year I will decide only after the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland and the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea,” said the Central Railway employee.

The men’s race, aiming for a timing of 2:08, was well within the target in the first half, thanks to the pacers doing their job to perfection. The strong wind on the sea link and the steep Peddar Road Hill on the return leg took its toll as the pace flagged a bit. Ruto, who was in the lead bunch along with his fellow Kenyans, picked up the pace after 35 kms and the race was once again within record time at the 39km mark. Ruto once again changed gears to widen the gap between the other two Kenyans and held on to win.

The women’s race was aiming for 2:25 time and there was a group of around 9 women till the 22km mark, among them all the favourites, running strongly with the two pace makers. The strong wind on the sea link also proved tough for them. At the 26 km mark there were four women in the lead, among them Dinknesh, who was always in control of the race. From 28 km Dinknesh broke clean and ran alone to finish strongly.

The men’s half marathon was won by Indrajeet Patel of ONGC with a time of 1:04:56. Coming in second was Soji Mathew of Railways (1:05.45) and Man Singh (1:05:45) in third place. Central Railway’s Sudha Singh claimed the first position in the women’s event in 1:18:24, while in second place was Kavita Raut of ONGC (1:21:15) and third was Kiran Sahdev (1:21:57).
