Himal Southasian cordially invites you to its annual lecture, 'Between the People and the Polis', which will be delivered by Karachi-based urban-philosopher, Arif Hasan, at 6.30 pm on the 7th of November, 2014 in the India International Centre (Auditorium), New Delhi.
'Between the People and the Polis' will address the major changes that are taking place in the urban areas of Southasia as mega-cities throughout the region explode in size. The informal sector that provides for the livelihood and transportation needs of the urban underclass is being attacked by officialdom, even as the middle-class becomes wealthier. Developers and investors are determining the shape and form of cities. Amidst these trends, the disparities between wealthy localities and low-income settlements are accelerating. Arif Hasan will further discuss alternative paths for urban development.
Arif Hasan is an award-winning architect, urban planner and social researcher. He has been involved with the Orangi Pilot Project since 1982 and is the founding chairman of the Urban Resource Centre.
This is a public event. Himal looks forward to seeing you there.
