Germany beat France 5-2, register record sixth world title
16122013Niklas Wellen slammed a brilliant hat-trick to guide defending champions Germany to their record sixth world title, beating unheralded France 5-2 in the summit clash of the Hero Junior Men’s Hockey World Cup at the floodlit Major Dhyan Chand, in New Delhi on Sunday.
It was a befitting end to the tournament as both Germany and France dished out splendid hockey much to the delight of the sparse crowd present on a chilly night. Germany rode on five goals which came from the sticks of Wellen (2nd, 44th, 46th minutes), Jonas Gomoll (60th) and Christopher Ruhr (68th) to pocket their sixth world title, two in a row. For France, Gaspard Baumgarten (16th, 40th) scored both the goals. The summit clash between underdogs France and five-time champions was touted as a contest between David versus Goliath but it was not one as the French gave the Germans a run for their money, at least in the opening 35 minutes. Cheered by their ambassador Michael Steiner, the Germans got off to an early lead when Wellen capitalized on a defensive lapse to score a field goal in the second minute. But the Frenchmen were no mood to go down without a fight and proved the fancied Germans that they were no pushovers. It was a neck and neck battle in the opening period as both the teams enjoyed nearly similar percentage of ball possession but France’s attacks looked more threatening. France drew parity in the 16th minute, riding on a fine field goal from Baumgarten, who beat Victor Aly in the German goal with a fierce shot from top of the circle. Therafter, Germany earned two penalty corners but France defence stood tall like a rock to go into the breather locked at 1-1. The match livened up after the change of ends as France surged ahead against the run of play when Baumgarten converted his side’s first penalty corner to stun the Germans. Germany soon earned a penalty corner but wasted the opportunity. |

16122013As Anna Hazare’s fast entered the seventh day, the governmment on Monday declared that the Lokpal Bill is its highest priority and it is even ready to extend the current session of Parliament, concluding on December 20, for passage of the anti-corruption measure.
Citing Hazare’s backing to the Bill, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath took a dig at AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal, a one-time protege of the Gandhian, saying those doing politics on the issue were finding fault with the measure. We are appealing to all parties to cooperate with the government as the Lokpal Bill is the need of the nation,” he said. ANURAG LAUNCHES NATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO HONOUR OUR WOMEN
16122013LOK SABHA MP AND YOUTH LEADER ANURAG SINGH THAKUR LAUNCHES NATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO HONOUR OUR WOMEN
Piecemeal approach to legal reforms & policy making has failed as rape cases double since Nirbhaya case
H.O.W. initiative to target 1000 schools & colleges across India in first year to help change male mind set towards women in society
New Delhi, 16 December, 2013: Anurag Singh Thakur, Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, and National President of the Bharatiya Janta Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP, today launched a nation-wide campaign, Honour Our Women (H.O.W. Foundation), that transcends all political barriers to unite on one platform the laudable individual efforts of various civil society groups, NGOs, student bodies, government representatives, politicians, media, corporates and individuals, and to work collectively and constructively towards charting out a concrete set of steps and future course of action for promising and securing empowerment, safety respect and honour for our women. The campaign will work on the streets and in schools and colleges in every state capital across India, to bring a change ground-up by sensitizing men on respecting women.
Launching the initiative, MP (LS) Anurag Singh Thakur said, “The HOW initiative is a befitting tribute to one woman who lost her life, but awakened a million others. A year back, when thousands of men and women took to the streets in protest, they weren’t just demanding justice for Nirbhaya – they also wanted a guarantee that there will not be any more Nirbhaya cases ever again. But despite new laws and all the policing, cases of rape and crime against women only seem to be on the rise. In wake of the growing public pressure, the measures taken under the current system have put a heavy skew only on legislative and judicial interventions without looking at the social fabric of the society. This legislative approach needs to be complemented with a direct grassroots approach to get men to speak up and convince other men to join hands in Honouring Our Women through concrete action.”
“Each day lost in stopping perpetration of crime against women exacerbates the colossal damage we do to our society. Besides violating a woman’s fundamental right to freedom, each rape erodes trust in our society and portrays India as intolerant to the rest of the world. In a vast and diverse country like India, just stronger law enforcement and faster justice by themselves will remain incomplete and unsuccessful unless we also bring in a mass-scale sociological and psychological change from within. HOW is a campaign that aims to shoulder this responsibility to bring about this change in mind sets and attitudes of men towards women, on a truly scalable basis. In the first year itself, we are aiming to mobilize sensitization and support in over 1000 schools and colleges in every state across the country,” added Mr. Thakur.
The HOW Foundation launch conference brought together eminent men from various walks of life including politics, journalism, government and cinema, to pledge their commitment to the HOW campaign, and to discuss effective measures of bringing this change in male mind set to honour women and on ways to spread the message across our personal and professional lives.
Speakers at the launch conference included Arun Jaitley, Leader of the Opposition, Rajya Sabha; Baijayant ‘Jay’ Panda,Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Biju Janata Dal; Arnab Goswami, Editor-in-Chief, Times Now; Ashutosh, Managing Editor, IBN7; Rahul Kanwal, Editor-at-Large, Headlines Today; Vivek Oberoi, Actor; Chetan Bhagat, Author; and, Kapil Sharma, stand-up comedian, Comedy Nights With Kapil.
