Dear friends across India,
Raped at 15, she had a baby girl and for years faced threats and abuse. Now a
judge wants her to 'compromise' with her rapist!
She doesn't want to talk to, meet or marry this man -- let's stand with her and fight for her rights.
Eminent
lawyers and judges say this ruling is "illegal" and "unethical"and have called on the Madras High Court's top judge to intervene. Chief Justice Sanjay Kaul has championed free speech;
if enough of us encourage him now, we can get him to take a stand for women's rights too.
A woman is raped every 20 minutes in India -- many are punished again by the courts. Let's get to 30,000 signers asking Justice Kaul to scrap this compromise and train judges to
stop harming rape survivors. Sign and tell everyone:https://secure.avaaz.org/en/no_compromise_for_rapeloc/?bTfWiab&v=61197In 2012, a lower court convicted V. Mohan of rape and sentenced him to 7 years in prison, but he appealed to the Madras High Court. The High Court judge has granted him interim bail, saying that he should enter into mediation as a “free man” and be able to vent his feelings!
Women have to battle patriarchy in all institutions. Instead of helping her, even the Tamil Nadu Women’s Commission chief has come out and said there is “no question of right or wrong” in this case and that the survivor should tolerate and compromise!
But the outcry of citizens has been heard several times before and this case is gathering attention across India. So let’s keep up the fight.
Sign now to urge Justice Kaul to scrap this case from mediation and train the judiciary to see its own patriarchy and misogyny:
