“We have the best culture. In our culture there is no place for a woman”. These comments by the defence lawyer ML Sharma in the BBC documentary ‘India’s Daughter’, left me ashamed and angry.

I am a lawyer and I feel that these statements by the defence lawyers in the Delhi gang rape case were a disgrace and violated our professional standards.

I want the Bar Council of India (BCI) to take strict action against these lawyers.

I also want an amendment to the BCI rules to check lawyers from making derogatory remarks when they represent persons in sensitive cases involving crimes against women.

It’s time we start changing this ugly reality and I believe that we can do it together.
